Hey, I need some advice on when building. How do I test my PC components before I put them on my case? So I put the motherboard on top of its box, I insert the CPU, Ram, CPU fan, and GPU? What do I do next? I know that you need to commect the CPU fan and insert the PSU on the 24pin connection. Where else do plug it? If I do not have an HD monitor, do I just connect my GPU to one of those Vga or DVI connectors?

Connect the DVI/VGA/HDMI/etc cable to your GPU when it's plugged in. Make sure the required cables for anything you see on the motherboard's plugged in. Note, not all motherboards will magically recognize a GPU so you might be forced to boot off of the onboard GPU to work your BIOS.

But yes, your steps all look fine to me. Make sure to ground yourself too (touch the PSU while it's plugged in when working with your PC).

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

1. On top of MB box.

2. Connect all power cables.

3. Connect CPU fan.

4. Start PC by shorting with anything conductive.

5. You can use DVI or VGA.

Yes, you can use the VGA or DVI cords.

What I did—without having to short things to turn it on—was place the mobo on box, hook everything up outside of case and then hook the connectors of the case's power on button to the mobo and  (cords are usually long) then press the button on the case.

Sorry to revive this post, but the alternative was to start up a whole new onw...

Say I'm doing a custom water cooling loop on my CPU and GPU. My GPU comes with a stock air cooler, so no problems there, but how do I keep the CPU cool while I'm testing the components before installing the cooler? Should I just install the CPU cooler in a small isolated loop, and then complete the loop once I've confirmed that all the other components work?

Thanks!

Use the stock cooler that came with your processor. If you have a 2011(-3) cpu, then use a 212 evo (or anything lying around)

If I've said something wrong, please correct me

I didn't put in my GPU when I built mine, but others do.

Read the manual for the motherboard, there should be two pins where you will eventually plug in the power button from the case. If you don't have an onboard power button on the motherboard itself, you can short out those two pins with anything metal (say, a key or screwdriver) two turn on the computer.
