So I just wanted to share this with everyone, if you have the same thing I do or just another story you want to tell feel free to post it below

 

I have known for a few years now that me + Mucinex DM = BAD. Two years ago I took some for a sinus infection I had and it literally felt like I was tripping on LSD (foreshadowing). All day during school I had one pupil that was 2x the size of the other and I felt dreamy and dizzy, I had at one point even started to convince myself that I was dreaming and that I should just walk out. I couldn't sit still for literally more than 3 seconds or I'd start shaking. Once I even was standing behind a chair rocking it back and forth and when I let go it looked like to me it was still leaning way back and I had thought I balanced it on two legs.

 

Fast forward to today. I take some cough medicine this morning because I have a sinus infection again. I get to school and I am just like I was two years ago when I took Mucinex DM. Wasn't quite as severe but it was otherwise the exact same instance. I realized that whatever is in the Mucinex DM must have been in the cough medicine as well so when I got home I checked, and there was something in common. Dextromethorphan. That may not mean anything to you, and thats okay, because it didn't mean anything to me either. However when I looked it up it turns out that when exceeding the recommended dosages it is a dissociative hallucinogen similar to, lo' and behold, LSD. According to Wikipedia, at doses 15-75x the recommended therapeutic dose can cause...

 

• Hallucinations
• Dissociation
• Vomiting
• Blurred vision and/or double vision
• Bloodshot eyes
• Dilated pupils
• Sweating
• Muscle spasms
• Sedation
• Euphoria
• Paresthesia
• Blackouts
• Sight loss
• Inability to focus eyes
• Skin rash
• And more....

​Now I can assure you I DID NOT take 15-75x the normal dose of DXM, so I am at this point just as confused as you guys are at how 1 pill of Mucinex DM or 10ml of cough medicine can cause reactions that are supposed to happen only when taking 15-75x what I did, so I keep researching. It turns out that 10% of Caucasians have certain alleles that slows down how the CYP2D6 enzyme in the liver metabolizes certain substrates, classifying them as "poor metaboilzers". In layman's terms, 10% of Caucasians' livers don't process certain chemicals as fast as the rest of the population, and in the list of substrates they can't process as fast are some Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, Morphine, Meth, Ecstasy, LSD, and of course, DXM. Wikipedia reads, "For example, if CYP2D6 converts a drug that has a strong effect into a substance that has a weaker effect, then poor metabolizers (weak CYP2D6 function) will have an exaggerated response to the drug and stronger side-effects". 

 

So apparently I am part of that 10% of slow metabolizers, and from my reaction to just a single pill of Mucinex DM I would say that I probably metabolize DXM hardly at all. Also if I ever did do LSD, Meth, or Ecstasy (which I am not) I am going to have to be REALLY careful and take some really small doses or I will probably kill myself from what most people would consider a small dose. Just felt like sharing my discovery, if anyone has interesting or funny stories to tell feel free to share below!

 

TL;DR : A normal dose of certain cough medicines can make me trip like I am on LSD

Ok. Here's an old work story.

I was working out in the countryside, Replacing a sewage plant. 

And i was just about done with the pipe connections.

Just one more left right at the point where the pipe goes into the house.

 

This is usually the most tense moment. Because people are generally idiots when they shouldn't be idiots.

I had spent a good part of the morning telling the guy "Do. Not. Flush. For the love of god. Do. NOT. flush. until i give you the go-ahead"

You can probably guess where this is going..

I had connected up a watermain underneath the pipe that was a bit deeper down. So i was standing at about chest height with the pipe...

And it was cold so the plastic had shrunk. Which meant getting the pipe connection together would involve a lot of industrial lube and swearing.
This was of course the time that the person decided to go take a shit and forget the "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T FLUSH!" part.

I had stopped trying to get the pipe on for a bit to catch my breath. Which meant that the pipe end was exposed and pointing at my chest at a slight angle.

That's when i heard the roar of water rushing through the piping. And in about three seconds i heard.. *SPLOOOOOSH!*..

And the house owner heard. "YOU ***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************"

Alright. One more

 

I was clearing out snow in town in the early morning with one of these.

Typical swedish working bloke for scale.

 

12 tonnes of swedish excavation machinery. With a two tonnes snowplow on the front. 

And i was just about done for the day. (because apparantly this is when accidents happen)

I was rumbling along at 50km/h down a two lane street and a police officer decided to cut me off.

Just as another car drove out in front of them.. They barely got their XC60 to stop in time.

And they had managed to get a bit of distance in between me an them.

 

But getting almost 15 tonnes of steel to stop from 50km/ in about 40m is not so easy.

So i threw both feet on the brake pedal and braced against the seat with my back to get as much pressure on the pedal as humanly possible.

And the massive hunk of metal started vibrating as the wheels started sliding slightly. 

It was at this point i locked eyes with one of the officers that was getting out of the volvo. It was as if time froze and we looked at each other with matching "OH FUUUUUUCK!" expressions

Thankfully i managed to stop it fast enough to only bump the volvo slightly on the tow bar.

The officer that was getting out of the car had jumped clear.. And the other one shat himself....

Then a pedestrian came running up. Laughing his arse off (With some concern showing though)

He had heard me as i slammed on the brakes. And as i had the window open he heard a shaky and loud

"FuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUuUCK!" (The small and the big U's marking the sound of my voice. Like if someone is rapidly karate chopping you in the back as you try to keep a steady note)
