R9 270x 2gb vs R9 280 3gb

zopa34

Hello! Right now i'm deciding between

 Asus AMD/ATI Radeon R9 270X 2GB GDDR5 PCIE - 208€

and

Asus AMD/ATI Radeon R9 280 3GB GDDR5 PCIE - 212€

and

MSI AMD/ATI Radeon R9 280 3GB GDDR5 PCIE - 213€

Here you can see full spec comparison between them

Which one should I go for? (In same price range is 760, but in benchmarks it shows worse results)

Other specs:

 -MB: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H

-CPU: AMD Athlon X4 760K on CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO

 -RAM: Corsair Vengance 8gb @ 1600

 -GPU: AMD Radeon 4850HD 512mb

 -HDD: 160gb and 320gb drives

 -PSU: Corsair CX600m

 -Case: Coolermaster N400

Yeah, 280 hits the sweet spot.

If you want a 270X, you almost might as well get a 270 and overclock it.

280 is the way to go.

MSI R9 280. Why would you even consider the 270X if you can afford the 280?

I've had both the 270x @ 1100/1400Mhz (a small OC) & the Gigabyte HD7950 (280) @ 1175/1250Mhz (decent overclock)

The HD7950/280 Cores usually are known for their 'extra' OC headroom (altho never claimed as official, there are many forum users who would say 7950/280's OC somewhat better than other GPU's)

The framebuffer 3GB of Vram is certainly useful, even tho there was minimal to no hitching on my 270x/2GB card, I was also lowering details down in game to take me from 45fps Ultra'ish FPS to Med-High 60FPS gameplay, with a small set of tweaks to options.

With the 280 and it's 3GB there is even less to turn down (Only AA in some cases 8xAA down to 2-4xAA) and then boom, playable 50fps+, whereas the 270x has to be OC'd or have lowered details to get there...

If moneys SUPER tight, 270x, if you can manage more, the 280 FOR SURE. :)

@zopa34

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Excellent.  I would recommend the Asus too, however with the amount of people that come here with problems with the Asus model, I can't really say that it would be a good option.

One quick question, I'm still using LG FLATRON that still has only D-SUB(VGA) output. And MSI R9 280 has  Dual-link DVI-I, HDMI and DisplayPort. It means I need new monitor too? Because I can't find a passive adaptor between these, only active ones that cost around 40$.

If my understanding is correct, since it's a DVI-I port I think you can use a cheap passive adapter like this. Manufacturers used to include these adapters with many cards, some may still. For comparison, DVI-D outputs carry only the digital signal, and so an active adapter would be required to drive an analog monitor.

Hopefully someone else will confirm my suspicions so you have something more concrete to work from.

Edit: The Newegg page for the same MSI R9 280 (R9280GAMING3G) has a photo of all included accessories, and a DVI-I to VGA adapter is there.

You get a DVI-I to VGA adapter in the box generally.

Both will be fine, the 280 is slightly better though.
