Used for gaming @ 1080p.  I plan to not do any upgrading for 18 months at least. Possibly 2 years.

I have 2 bangin cpu's in my possession.  i5 2500k which will do 5.0 and a 3770k which will do 4.8, however I cannot provide the proper cooling for the 3770k as I sold my custom water loop.  Which one should I keep and which one should I sell.  I hear people say some games now and future games will benefit from hyperthreading.  Will dropping down to the 2500k effect my performance?

Cheers!

You have to remember the tick tock cycle of intel, ivy was a tick where as haswell was a tock.

so in that case if you're just HD gaming the 3770k is fine.

It all depends about the price. Buy the 2500K if the price is about half of 3770K. Bear in mind that 8C/T will be better for gaming after PS4/XBOX ONE will truly replace current consoles. Until then, 4 heavily OCed cores are better for gaming. BTW, I would expect 5 GHZ from that 2500K.

If you plan to use this cpu for a while, I would go with a 2500K because hyperthreading isn't really useful right now in games and it sometimes can decrease performance. I would just get the 2500K and overclock it.

Thanks to all who replied so far(with exception to kilobytez95's troll post).  For those of you who didn't actually read the OP I already own both cpu's.  Both are excellent overclockers but I am trying to decide which one to sell to put towards gpu(s) upgrades.

To those who suggested to keep the 3770k are there any benchmarks or information supporting that it will indeed perform better than the 2500k?

if ur an overclocker go with the 2500K

if u can delid go with the 3770k

I am very scared to attempt the delid and coolaboratory liquid pro is not easy to come by in Canada. :(  I feel as though delidding would be pointless using my MX-2 or MX-4 and all the other average stuff I have on hand.

Trust me I have been contemplating the delid for a loooooooooong time but I never worked up the balls to do so.... or even reached down to check if I had em. :D

Thanks for the vid.  I have seen the vice method videos before but that one looked even better than the others I have seen.  As stated above the coollaboratory liquid pro is not easy to get in Canada.  Not sure where I can order it from aside from F-CPU and pay a whackload for shipping and duty fees.  Also still scared I would brick this amazing chip.  I've seen folks on OCN who have broken their corners of the pcb using this method.

I probably won't be going for a delid.

I guess I will just have to run a bunch of tests once I get my new GPU's before I deciding which cpu to let go since noone has provided any benchmarks or graphs. Thanks to everyone who answered.

Cheers!

Here is my take, altought expect me to be biased towards the 2500k:

IF you plan/are rendering, editing, encoding MORE than gaming and you can provide the cooling for the nasty 3770K sure, keep that one, you will get 2-3 less fp in games because the extra threads will process smth else while gaming so taking up some performance(no links on hand)

IF you plan more on gaming, and you don't want to throw alot of money at cooling, the 2500k is a choice, plus you will get more money from selling the 3770k for your gpu(s) but, with the 3770k you will have PCI-E 3.0 (nobody brought this up? really?) so double the bandwitth of the Sandy chip.

Conclusion: for gaming i will stick to the 2500k, get more money from the sell and a better gpu(s), i had mine to 5.1 ghz gaming with 70c temps normal ambient on a Schythe Mugen 3(55$), not that expensive compared to a 212evo.

Codename: HighFlyer, specs:  CPU: i5 2500k cooled by a H70ish(2 rad)   Mobo: MSI MPower Z77   GPUs: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC 1150 MHZ core, 3150 memory both   RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16G @1600mhz   SSD: ADATA Premier Pro sx900 / HDD Seagate Barracuda 1TB/Samsung 1TB   Power supply: Corsair RM650 80+ Gold   Case Corsair Carbide 500R   5.4 ghz achieved on the good old 2500k, may it rest in peace. Current daily OC is 4.8 @1.41 v
