Possible to extend livespan of headphone earpads with impregnation spray?

Hans Power

Hello!

This is more of an experimental question but I wonder if my idea would be wise to try out. I just ordered a pair of headphones with detachable synthetic leather earpads and a synthetic leather headband. The problem with that material is that it turns briddle and crumbles after some time so I was thinking if an impregnation/water proofing spray for fabric and (synthetic) leather like this one would be a good way to extend the live span of the leather parts. I happen to have a can of that lying around and I wonder if I should try that. Any thoughts or even experiences with that?

If you can, just order some leather conditioner, it'll moisturize the leather and you only need to do it every few months.

(It's super cheap, like $5 for a bottle)

It should still work on synthetic leather I believe.

when my M50 headband begins to breakdown, I plan to get some velour fabric to reconstruct the headband, while also reconfiguring the padding. the sewing couldn't be too difficult.

Could you provide me with a link for that? I live in germany and I'm having trouble translating this. Maybe a glance at a bottle of the stuff you recommend would make it easier.

I also wonder if the spray I have is just that.

Your link is for waterproofing. On the contrary, the cracking of leather and pleather (plastic leather) is caused by the opposite, too dry or not enough moisture. Leather conditioners like recommended above do just that, moisturize and condition the leather. Just type 'leather conditioner' in amazon. And get the automotive ones. It's practically the same, but automotive ones smells nicer.

Alright! Thanks guys - this is very helpful. I hope it also works with synthetic leather.

It should, I believe it's essentially very similar in terms of the way the material acts.

Actually, after some further research (found a decent german article about synthetic leather care) there seems to be a huge difference. According to that normal leather care products often interact badly with the synthetic leather and make the material sticky. But there are some extra sprays which delay the evaporation of the plasticizer in the synthetic leather which would make it crumble in the first place. That is actually what I was searching for.
