EK WaterBlocks - experience and tips

Hey everyone,

Happy new year to all.

In the last year I started working for a German computer store on Weekends.

My Boss wants me to build a custom water cooled PC for show in the shop.

He asked me to use EK blocks because they're in in huge amounts in stock.

What are your experiences with ek stuff?

And wich block will work best for a 5960X or has the best performance in general?

And what is your opinion on their 5,25" bay pump-resirvoir combo unit?? I thinks it is interesting.

Linus may should test it. I would appreciate it!

Thanks for constructive tips!

Yours Christian

EK makes amazing products, there is a reason EVGA goes to EK for their hydrocopper cards.

Have no fears about EK, their stuff is the tits

EK makes very good products that are very well built. If you are looking into CPU blocks the EK Supremacy EVO is your best choice.

The Supremacy EVO CPU Block is an awesome performer on pretty much every CPU.  Here's a review to show you some results. http://www.xtremerigs.net/2014/08/27/ek-supremacy-evo/

5.25" bay pump-res are nice units but personnally, if you have the space inside the case you choose some pump-tube res looks better but it becomes a personnal preference.  On a performance level it's pretty close.

The switched for the 900 series I guess but the havent always gone to EK

The Hydro Copper 980 also uses EK, unless there's multiple variants.

I'm sorry luc. I know EKWB is an awesome company but you're basically ALWAYS biased...

OT:

Yes EK makes really nice products, I dislike the cirlces design though, also they can be a little bit pricey.

@LinusTech

Maybe Linus can test the combo unit. I Think this is a good option in smaller cases and I'd like to see his opinion as well.

Has anyone used them? (Combo unit)

I'm also interest for Ek for my private rig.

EK does make a clean SCQ design that does not have the circles. I do agree though I always chose the Clean CSQ over the original CSQ design.

I know that. Just said I didn't like the circle design that's all.

I figured lol, just wanted to comment on your post, so others that read the thread that are just starting out learning about custom loops, know that there is also a clean CSQ design out as well.

There isn't anything else to add as far as opinions go. Bay Res are nice because they take up less room but are a pain to fill because of their location. Since you said its a show room PC I would use a tube as it looks better to me as far as appearances go and you don't have to worry about temperatures or functionality because its not used in the same manner as a personal PC. So for those reasons I would pick Tube.

Here is a chart with a few more CPUs (for socket 2011) taken from overclock.net made by Moonmanovich

900x900px-LL-b07c94a8_H2VLlAe.png

One thing for OP to note is that most CPU blocks perform very very close to each other. At the end of the day if your CPU is running at dangerous temps, running 3C higher or lower will still be considered dangerous/uncomfortable. The only time it will make a difference is when you go for a significantly worse performing block. For example the EK Supreme LTX vs. the EK Supremacy EVO.

It's usually best to go with what looks best and buy better TIM if you want a temperature improvement. That can also cause a 3C difference in CPU temps. If the Evo is your style go for it. :) It is also very much a case of, you get what you pay for.

In regards to tube vs. bay don't forget that it's easier to bleed the loop with a tube res. Something that can be really important when building a loop your first time. A bay res will look much better if you have a small window in the side panel or maybe even no window.

I think what he means is that you work for EK, but I think EK blocks are awesome.

You should release a waterblock for the Asus X99 WS-E...

I would be surprised to see a block for this board in the future.  It was ruled out when they made the mosfet block for a bunch of other X99 Asus board.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have always used EK.... Wink wink EK Luc

Nah the only issue I have had with EK is the lack of chipset and mosfet coolers for the boards I buy :/
