Power Supply For MSI Lightning R9 290x Crossfire

Jester196

Hey guys, I'm going to be upgrading my GPU from a HD 7950 to an R9 290x Lightning in a couple of days. I'm also planning on buying another one next month. So what kind of power consumption am I looking at.

I've been thinking of getting a Super Flower 850w 80+ plus gold as I read that the cards in crossfire wont use more than 750w, but I'm not sure if this is true or not. I'm just not wanting to be spending more than I have to on the PSU.

P.S. My current PSU is an XFX Core Edition 550w.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

I'd recommend the EVGA 750G2 or the 850G2.

I used an FX-8350 and 290X lightning crossfire on 850W, so you should be good

a 850W is plenty for 290x xfire.

go for the EVGA 850W G2 though.

At least 850W with an 8320, but be wary, that CPU will bottleneck two 290x's severely in many games at 1080p, so I wouldn't recommend it (crossfire 290x) unless you're going for 1440p or higher.

I would suggest like 850-1000w. My 850w cried for help when I started to OC a lot.

Thanks for the speedy replies, I'll definitely have a look at that EVGA PSU

I'm planning on going to 4k soon, il be using 1080p for the next 3 months at most. Thanks for the reply

850G2. Don't get the 750G2 for two Lightning 290X's, it won't be enough.

SInce the prices between 850W and 1000W PSUs are not that harsh I would go with the one offering 1000W, since that will give you a bit more flexibility and overclocking headroom.
