It looks strange. It looks dumb. It looks like something out of F-Zero. And it is red.

If I could afford it, this would be one of the routers I'd look towards.

Yes, If you've got Wireless AC, it's pretty good.

May be this router is for more like tons of device at a home.

I posted this elsewhere at the beginning of the week when mine arrived(the 890L has been available in Canada for a bit now), but it still seems like very few of these have been 'tested'. that's how I found this site, I'm continually looking for more info on it.

anyway, here's my initial impressions from the DIR-890L...

Figured since I couldn't find any info about this router before buying it, I might as well help get some info out there.
15904_10155015623955032_1055264796301910

my coles notes version:
-it's a new 'high performance' wireless ac router from dlink. It boasts AC3200 'tri-band' performance, dual-core processor(I've heard 1ghz, but could not confirm anywhere), and beamforming.

Unboxing:
the router was packaged very nicely, and included the standard accessories.
10906194_10155015615625032_7970042155695
10896948_10155015635065032_7953352399266
an unboxing video can be found online:

Setup:
again, nothing unusual here really. the controls are VERY basic, in fact I'm sure most would consider them too basic. There's few options to get your hands dirty, that's for sure. On the other hand, it's very easy, and so far has 'just worked'. One of the proposed benefits of the tri-band design is the ability to separate 'slower' wireless n devices from 'faster' wireless ac devices on the 5ghz band. there's a feature called 'smart connect' that will automatically do this for you. and so far it seems to be working. I only have one ac device, and it's giving me a lightning fast connection right now all by itself on the third channel.

it is a large router, but not as big as I was worried about. Side by side with my old DIR-655, it's not going to be the easiest router to hide, but it's not overpowering my desk either.
10898207_10155015614560032_8664399441037

physical connections are nothing special, typically assortment of LAN/WAN ports, and two usb ports(one 3.0, one 2.0)
10425403_10155015649750032_1887894591357
10882125_10155015627900032_7613544663713

when you first connect the router, you do have to run through a set up wizard, it only takes a couple minutes, and only gives you a couple options to select. I had trouble connecting to the internet, and eventually figured out I had to power cycle my router before it would work. After you're set up, you will be forced to input an SSID and password. I thought this a bit odd, mostly because the 'default' SSID and password is plastered all over the place, but didn't come up automatically in the wizard. I was not able to connect to the router wirelessly until I ran the wizard, so all these default names and passwords were essentially useless anyway. It's possible I missed something, but I assume these things will not be used by most owners anyway. maybe they will be activated with a 'reset' or something, I'm not sure. but it comes with a card with the info, a sticker on the top of the router with the info, AND it's found on the info sticker on the bottom of the router too. seems like it's more important than it seems...?
1512848_10155019923775032_22728129972539

anyway, with all that done, you have some basic control in the menu once you login:
10882339_10155015650390032_3409284878628

After that you're presented with a home screen with a nice visual representation and some quick info about your network.
10897828_10155015610115032_3148848794738

there's more options than I bothered to take screen caps of, I chose these ones just to give an overall example of the interface design.

So far I'm pleased with the performance. I don't have a really reliable way of testing speeds, but I have a couple real world comparisons.
1) transferring large media files from my wired desktop to the wifi connected HTPC
-DIR655 and the 'stock' wifi card that came with my HP desktop(an old wireless b/g card rated up to 54mbps). i was struggling to get 1MB/s
-DIR890L and asus ac68 wifi card, I was maintaining over 11MB/s.
2) media streaming files from my HTPC
-before the upgrades, it was sketchy to stream anything to my other wifi client(laptop, phone, BD player, another HTPC) but seemed to work ok for anything 720p or less on a wired desktop.
-after the upgrades, I've been able to stream 1080p rips to anything that's capable of playing them. i was streaming two low bitrate 1080p movies to my phone and laptop simultaneously without stutter. high quality 1080p is still hit or miss

Bro, you should mention this is a AC5300 router. Nearly mixed it up with the DIR-890L (AC3200)....

i think he's discussing the 'line', not the specific model. at least i assumed since he showed pictures of the 890R and 895R. in fact most of the pics are of the 890L

If I trusted D-link I'd probably (stupid phone made this word "poetically" xD) be more interested. If looks cool but I'm currently happy with my Asus N66U. However if the reliability is just as good or higher than my N66U then I might reconsider D-link. At least it isn't Linksys or Netgear.

It is red and it has many antennas. It must therefore be fast, and must also therefore be bought by me.
