What's with the 'thanks for your service' and such to soldiers etc

Guest

No it is not: Do you realize that the military has it's own advertisement budget and can basically request collaborations with the TV networks for their very own brand of product placement?

a vetran must be respected cuz he's the reason you were sleeping peacefully, not just in the us but even in my country soldiers are respected for their service and have many special privileges from the government... everything is tax free for them

Well that's a bit over the top  o_0 unless there are constant threaths there and they protect you :P

People keep saying that and i never understand what its actually supposed to mean (as a non american). What would really happen if america didnt fight all those foreign wars? Fighting for freedom seems a bit like a cliche unless the country is being invaded imo.

This is getting a bit off topic, but the United States is seen as "the world police".  I feel they come from an isolationist view, where they feel they need to fight to maintain global security so they can return to this view, something they have idolized since Jeffersonian times.

Really, America has always been keen to not intervene, joining WW1 and 2 only after it was clear their involvement would be required, or in the latter case, forced.

This changed in the Cold War, when it became apparent to the US that they could no longer remain isolationist, as they were so economically strong, yet with Nuclear weapons were no longer safe.  So, to maintain international security they feel they need to engage in many of these wars.  All so they can return to a period of isolationism.

So in a sense, that is why they do it.  I'm not saying every war is justified, I'm just explaining what some believe the motive of these moves are.

Part of it is with the sacrifices the military members make, we get to continue our way of life.  It's less to do with specific conflicts.  If the USA had a tiny military, world wars would have gone much differently.  Even the more recent conflicts, however misguided or whatever you want to say about them, have kept borders more or less the same over time.  Precisely because of the powerhouse countries, that people living good lives get to continue living good lives.  Even though it sucks for the people who pay the price in the conflict zones.

My bet, If everyone stayed out of the middle east being a mess. I mean, before the us gave guns to the taliban during the cold war, a lot of deaths would have been prevented

Actually they are never "policing" anything. When they have no chance of securing economical interests like in the case of europe, or when it's a barren country with little in the way of economy or resources to be had like certain African places, dictators and even genocide are a.o.k. But when there's some resources or economical or strategical advantage to be had, then let's support our heroes that watch over the evil terrorists that we never found and their weapons of mass destruction that never existed to begin with.

I know I am supposed to love em' I work with them, but I sometimes envy how soldiers Or previous soldiers are treated. I do respect them, in the highest way. BUT being a cop people are like "Oh, fuck off you pig" then my partner is like I am a veteran and people are like "Oh, nice talking to you". OMG it pisses me off. I am legit like a good cop to the best of my abbilties. I try really hard to help people and get no thanks. It reallys saddens me to see how people think

War is bad.  Soldiers are just people.  Soldiers that retain "who" they were before entering a war theater deserve accolade... it is just that it will usually be hard to tell who the "true" soldiers are.

Cops deserve more thanks than soldiers.  Some of my soldiers were full blown retards.

It only takes a 5% bad apple rate to turn all Officers into "Pigs".  No offense, Police Officers are people too.  :)

The WW2 soldiers definitely deserve the thanks of everyone in my opinion.. without U.S. intervention that whole situation would have only gotten worse and worse...

Btw: Hello Officer. Nice talking to you. :P Keep the streets safe!

Obnoxious patriotism and being indirectly responsible for the murders of thousands of civilians is something people should be thanked for?

No, but we'll be thanking them when North Korea decides to go even further with their terrorism. People in the US military know they are taking a chance at facing danger to protect their country, and that's something commendable.

God forbid people be thankful, and God forbid people actually believe that the country they were born in is a great and wonderful place.

Let's all just live in misery since people can't handle another nation's patriotism without crying about it.

That's a policeman. Western countries have not been in a war that actually threatened their freedom (let's face it, we're doing whatever the hell we please, be it good or bad) for 70 years, and at this point it's highly unlikely it will happen for another 70 unless our society implodes,at which point it will hardly matter which government invested more in weapons. If you're referring to terror, it's not like the military can do much about it anyway... 9/11 wasn't going to be prevented through moar firepower. And the Osama Bin Laden witch hunt was exactly that, a witch hunt. Killing him did absolutely nothing, IF they killed him, save contribute to fueling the us' weapons market and their ever-lasting arms race just a bit more.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

That's not what I was talking about. I was talking about them trying to prevent the movie from releasing. It's taking away freedoms that people have and that's an act of terrorism.

To add to your point, the actions of soldiers in the Middle East have if anything made the US less safe.  Even if the soldiers had no malicious intent when they joined up for service.
