Cant overclock my 4690k

brayden099

Hi guys I recently did my first major upgrade to my pc. I got a 4690k and a msi h97m-g43 motherboard.

Just before i went into the bios to see if i could do any light overclocking but i cant seem to click on anything to change frequencies ect. Im essentially stuck at 3.5ghz.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot overclock with H-series motherboards (unless you have a G3258), you need a Z-series motherboard (Z87/Z97).

H97 is not an overclocking chipset.

Update your BIOS, H97 is able to OC.

Oh reeree? I didn't know that it could. Is that for all boards?

Yeah, Intel mandated it after the Devil's Canyon launch.

According to MSI themselves, you certainly can overclock. So i assume updating the Bios would fix it.

Yeah. Apparently they also have this program called Live Update that updates things like that automatically. But here is a link directly to the Bios download for your board: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/H97MG43.html#down-bios

Just use that and you should be fine.

Yeah, Intel mandated it after the Devil's Canyon launch.

Noooooo they didn't. The brands themselves allowed this but Intel said NOTHING about it.

In short, a microcode patch that could be snuck in with a windows update can IMMEDIATELY prevent OC'ing on anything but Z97.

Even if it can overclock, it wasn't made for it, the power delivery might not be able to deliver much more than the tdp of the fastest I7. Maybe get the most you can on stock voltage ?
