How long will the 980 last me?

probably 6-7 years at that res with ease. just get a cheaper gpu and save like 300gbp you can use to upgrade in the future

It will keep you going for a stupid amount of time because 1280x1024 is not that many pixels. Also the 5820k should last you a good 6 years at least I think

Probably but it depends on what you're doing. 

The 980 is generally a bad value compared to the 970 though and you should spend your money instead on a new display and a cheaper graphics card if your objective is to game.

Because i splashed all my cash on my rig (£1200-1500), the monitor is from my old PC which i had for 10 years

Last? probably around 7-8 years deending on how you take care of it or not overclock it that much..

Outdated? Probably be outdated & too old in about 3-4 years you probably be finding yourself buying a new graphics for "better quality/performance"  compared to the "Old" one

That's pretty silly considering the display makes up a huge part of your experience.

It should last you a lot more than 2 years. Doesn't justify its price though ^^ You could have bought a 120$ R9 270 and enjoyed max settings for 2-3 years, then bought another card for the same price again and again once every two years and in 8 years you would still have paid less than a 980, but you'd have better performance.

why didn't you go for a 970 and a 1080p monitor? >_< 

 

it'll last as long as it lasts. (until broken) if you want to know how long it'll perform, that depends on future technologies that we are all still uncertain of. (stupid question)

you could have bought a 750 and be fine with it with your monitor.

Should've just went with a 4790k and a more balanced build in that case. I don't see where a 5820k and 8GB ram would make any sense.

Video editing for a school project (pretty big) and 8GB would be enough as i will only be editing files 4GB or less )the guy who runs it is an avid computer enthusiast and has been building rigs for over 15 years and is a water-cooling advocate: he is also my maths teacher (out of all people lol) and he said my rig would do the job fine due to 6 overclocked cores, a fast SSD and a 980 for video acceleration

Looks like you got a sleeper there... it's like a ford escort with a 500HP motor in it...   In all seriousness, I would try to spend at least $100 on a 1080p monitor. Like others have said, the monitor is a large part of the experience.  

Anyway, for your current rig, a 1024 monitor would last you hundreds of years...maybe even thousands...
