Err is my HDD okay..?

MattTheMayor

Okay. My oldest component in my new build is the HDD. It's a SATA 2 HDD 1TB by HGST. Well ever since I started my computer for the first time, I hear this "rattling" noise coming off my hard drive whenever I open programs, making it the loudest thing in here. Checked the cages, not unscrewed or anything, just the drive itself. Now I hear some sound coming off it that resembles rain dropping on a metal roof.

Is this okay? Should I invest money into a new drive? Or is this something bad that I can return at Fry's?

Start backing up your data. Better safe than sorry :P.

Test it via Seatools for DOS (after the backup)

How old is the drive? If it's done it since new then possibly it's just a loud hard drive, but rattling and clicking is often a sign that it's near the end of live, as Altecice said, back your stuff up now :P

I just bought it with my parts. It was cheaper than the one I planned to have (WD Blue), but since HGST was owned by WD, I decided to get it. How do I check if it's fragmented?

Run chkdsk in cmd, and also disk defrag in the search bar.

This is the End!

Start backing up your data.

Check it with some HDD diagnostic tools after backup!

Just copy and paste the contents to a new drive.

If OS is installed on that HGST drive, You may want to clone the drive.

But I suggest perform a  clean OS installation on new drive.

If it's really almost the end, I'm definitely returning this back to Fry's haha. I don't think I need to back anything up since this is a fairly new build and I haven't really installed anything except games. Nor do I have an extra drive available. Is that fine?

Yeah that seems alright, it would be the same serial key you used to begin with

Rattling doesn't sound like it failing. I'd recommend backing up just in case. Any chance you could get vibration dampeners or something? May just be it vibrating too much. Failing usually sounds like a popping, snapping noise I guess, rather than rattling.

As others suggested defragging could be worth it too.

Since you just built it, check the screws holding it into the drive cage. Tighten as needed. Also, put at least one screw into the drivecage and the case if possible.

Also. How is this drive? http://www.frys.com/product/7725598?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

And if I get it, and when I reinstall windows, do I need to put in a different product key? Or the same one? Or is the key like remembered in the motherboard.

Yes you can install the Windows with same key.

It is hard to say if your condition is "okay" and or, if your hdd is still good or not because HGST drivers in the SATA2 era were not the quietest even at brand new condition. It would depend on the warranty if you can return it or not. Just to be safe backup your needed data just in case.

Download "Hard Disk Sentinel" it's a fairy decent program that'll run for free for a while, and give you fairly decent idea if your disk is alright or not, dunno why I didn't mention it earlier

I have a hard drive that sounds just like yours in the video, how fragmented is the hard drive?, do you have several partitions?

Or check the load/unload count in the SMART with any software that can read the SMART data.

If the load/unload count is close to 300,000 you better start making a back up.

The stars died for you to be here today.
