Hello people of LTT forums!

Yep. Title mostly says it. I'm 15 and love tech as you may know. I don't have a lot of money usually and, since I'm basically underaged for a job in the U.S ., do you guys have any job ideas that I might be able to earn some money from? I'm kind of a noob at this stuff. Also, I have school from like 8 am to 3:30 pm, and a lot of studying and homework. I'd like to earn a couple of extra bucks so I can start putting them towards college, car, etc, and mainly my rig and room and setup and all that cool jazz. I would start mowing lawns, but it's winter. When summer and spring comes along, I'll start mowing. I'm pretty good at tech, not really computer programming and stuff. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated  .

There are several avenues available to you.

1. As @Godlygamer23 says, you can build PC's for other people and charge a nominal fee (I suggest no more than $50 a build, as they can get it done for that much at a computer store which will give them a 1-year warranty).

2. Tech Support for friends and family - this can include things like Upgrading OS's, fixing viruses, performing spring cleaning and/or maintenance to speed up their slow-ass computers, etc.

3. Learn HTML + CSS and build simple websites (Alternatively, learn to use WordPress or some other CMS platform to build interactive websites based on templates).

4. Building or designing home or small office networks.

There are other options as well. I suggest learning some programming, like C# or HTML + CSS. Learn Networking as well, as it's pretty important for most tech careers later on.

I will try all of these.

You could shovel drive ways, etc. In the winter and mow lawns in the spring/summer, unless you live where it doesn't snow...

Yeah, it snows, but not very often, and not very much.

Another great idea. In addition to whatever computer tech work you might be able to get, shovelling driveways is going to be a much steadier flow of money. Go to all the old ladies in your neighbourhood and offer to shovel their driveway for a small fee (You can either offer to do it every day for a minor fee, like $5 a pop, or once a week for like $20 each - keep in mind, I have no idea what the going rate for shovelling driveways is haha).

I could be reading this wrong as I am from Canadia, but you have to be at least 14 to get a job http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/youthlabor/Postingrequirements.htm and you be 15

It will vary by each state. Also many jobs (Handling money, such as being a Cashier) in Canada require you to be at least 16. Mostly for insurance and liability reasons.

Yeah I know, I was assuming this individual is 'Merican

Yep. 'Merican.

It snowed a little today, but it melted 3 hours later, lol. I'll try once it comes around. There's a small tech shop where I live, and it's like the only one in my city, so maybe I could see if they'd accept a job for me. I'd probably only work on weekends though.

since I'm basically underaged for a job in the U.S .

It varies state to state most states I recall allows a 15 year old to work but limited hours. Best Buy may or may not hire a 15 year old it's hard to say.

In my state/area we have this pretty cool restaurant which an acquaintance I had from middle school is a host at I myself may look at doing a similar thing at a closer location of the same restaurant. Though I'm waiting until it gets closer to summer to apply since it's mostly a convenience thing.  Also a lot of the suggestions above are options too if your state does not allow 15 year olds to work.

You need to find out what the local/state/federal laws are on age requirements first. Maybe they would hire you on "under the table" and pay cash, but I wouldn't if I were a business owner, because my insurance wouldn't cover you if you fucked up some old ladies computer accidentally and she sues me.

Assuming you can legally work there, I'd first approach them, and let them know of your interest in tech, and that you would like a part time job. But also tell them that you are willing to volunteer for free, learning the basics (or demonstrating that you do know the basics), until/unless they can afford to hire you on. Make sure to talk - in person - to the owner of the shop. It would also be great if you could bring examples of your skills (Pictures or a build log of your own custom-built PC is a good way). Also be prepared to complete a demonstration of your skills.

Ok. Thanks. Do you have any other ideas? I recommended my friend some budget build parts, and asked him if he wanted me to build it for him for $20 and he told me to fuck off and that his uncle would do it(he's a tech noob). So that didn't work. Dunno if I could build computers for people that I have direct contact to.

I could also make videos showcasing products that the store makes and put them on YouTube and AdSense them, kind of like Linus did with NCIX tech tips.

Your friend doesn't sound like much of a friend. But at the same time, if he's the same age as you, he likely doesn't have a job either. Does his uncle know anything about PC Building?

About the video showcase thing, they probably wouldn't pay you for that, as they wouldn't recoup the cost of paying you with adsense. Linus has like a million subscribers. This shop might have a few thousand potential viewers. You could volunteer to do that for free (assuming they don't offer you a job) as a way to get in their good graces.

Linus also had a long standing good relationship with NCIX before starting NCIX Tech Tips.

Ask best buy, staples - etc. They have stuff although IDK what the quality/prestige/pay will be.
