I think we all should...!

Maheshvara

I think we all should stop recommending HDD's as boot drives! I was also doing that, but like i said in my status, 2 days ago i went to my father's friend place, and he wanted to show us something on his laptop (to be precise he wanted to show it's specs to me), and while it was booting up, because of that dams slowness i was like

So, do you guys think we should stop recommending HDD"s as boot drives? It's better to get a 60Gb SSD, and then buy a bigger secondary drive later :D

I've never recommended an HDD as a boot drive, except in budget systems.

I started recommending SSD's 2 years ago.

I am now recommending 256 GB SSD's for build (And a HDD on the side)

You can get an SSD even with a low budget (but you need to aim for a low storage one)

We bought this SSD 2-3 years ago :) Did not notice the full difference till now (for some reason people don't trust me with fixing their PC's :()

Money is the all limiting factor

Quite sure that 60Gb SSD = 1Tb HDD in price :)

I recommend an SSD to anyone who is building a PC/ looking for an upgrade / random people on the street.

Really the only time I wouldn't is if it was a crazy low budget, and I was looking to squeeze as much performance out as possible.

I'd rather get the money into some other part like a GPU/CPU upgrade, as an SSD can be added on later pretty easy.

CPU: 6700k GPU: Zotac RTX 2070 S RAM: 16GB 3200MHz  SSD: 2x1TB M.2  Case: DAN Case A4

Yeah, but it's better to get something good, than something like V300 (read that it is in real world performance very slow! Comparable to a high end HDD, like WD Black) :D

And what would you use for mass storage?

You have to buy a HDD as well. If you can spare $60 a SSD is a great option. But on a budget, I'd much rather put that $60 into the Graphics card or CPU.

Yeah, if it's crazy low, but most budgets are 500$/euros~, and you can fit that inside :)

I'd then recommend them not to install anything of importance so they can do a fresh install when they get it :)

Don't people have HDD's lying around O.o Right next to me i have 2 ext. ones (one dead, and i'm too lazy to restore the second one...), and i'm quite sure i have 4-6 more in the house (all of it would equal 3.5 Tb in all) :D

All I'm saying is, I'd rather wait a couple minutes for my computer to turn on and get better real life performance.

I only take 1.5 minutes on a 7200rpm HDD and a weak CPU.

When you recommend a build you don't usually expect the person to have an old HDD lying around do you?

If they didn't use and SSD before it, then it's okay, for them, but if they did, it'll be tough!

Also, why do you need so much storage (i know, just throwing  a very, very stupid question out there)? If you watch a movie, then delete it after watching it, the same goes for TV shows. As for games, play some that don't need 60Gb of space just because they have uncompressed sound...

Also, just asking, but are these numbers good for an old (2+ years, maybe even 3 years old) SSD???

If it's a real budget system, so about £400 or less, then I wouldn't recommend an ssd, but anything over that I think it's a must have, and you'd be foolish not to pick one up

I learned one way to avoid slow boot time: always put computer to sleep mode not shut down it. Battery of laptops can last weeks in sleep mode.

I don't know anyone that doesn't want an SSD now.

My friend doesn't have one and constantly complains about how his PC takes ages to boot up and how long it takes to load certain applications.

I haven't recommended a HDD for a boot drive for a long time now. It's just not worth it when SSD's are coming down in price.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

I actually always do this (i actually put it in hibernate, but similar enough) because i can't be arsed to wait for 50~ tabs to open, out of which 5~ are YT... It takes too much time with this crappy laptop...

Agreed! :D For mass storage HDD's are good because they aren't boot drives, but for boot drives, an SSD is a must (this'll become my new saying, atleast a variation of it :D)

As soon as SSD's are as cheap as HDD's, or at least the 1TB SSD's are down to around £150 instead of £250-£300, I wont be using HDD's any more! :D
