Hey, my 7990 started having major coil whine. Is there anything you can do or do you just have to return it?

But on a side note, the coil whine is extremely strange. It only happens DIRECTLY when gaming. When playing skyrim there is massive coil whine, but the second I pause it the coil whine ends. Like instantly... any reason for this?

In this case, it's caused by the load on the VRC and VRM. Pausing the game removes the load from the GPUs. There isn't much you can do - even returning it is probably out of the question.

bc it stops processing more frames...

If it annoys you, RMA it or glue the coils

I had same issue, massive coil whine noise but only under game load. I.e far cry 4 I would exit to menu screen and it would stop, then back into game and would start again.

If you are at over like 300+ frames then it's normal, all cards will coil whine. For instance valley benchmark loading screen at 1000fps my card still whines.

But how I solved mine in games was swapping my psu, I had a cheap psu from corsair swapping to an evga g2 supernova fixed mine.

What was different about the EVGA unit compared to the Corsair unit that stopped the whining? I have a HX750 and get coil whine from my GTX 970. Do you think getting that PSU unit would fix it? I have heard a lot of good things about the EVGA G2.

Coil whine usually only happens under load, or when running specific programs.

You can try to RMA, but usually manufacturers do not accept coil whine as a defect, and if they do RMA the second one you get will probably have it too.

The last option is to change your PSU. Many people have found that switching power supplies can completely remove coil whine. You should probably test different PSUs first to find which one doesnt cause coil whine.

Sending it back is probably out of the question coil whine is NOT an RMA issue (unless really severe) and depending on the retailers returns policy (varies between "you bought it it's yours" to "change it at anytime in [virtually] any condition") you may not be able to return it .  Coil whine is basically some static component vibrating  because it is being exited at its harmonic frequency about all you can do is stop this vibration in some way by either adding mass (add globs of NON-CONDUCTIVE glue etc to the component [carefull of heat build up] this basically ends any warranty though and doesn't always work)to the component to take the resonant frequency out of this exitations frequency or by changing the frequency of the exitation (different power call i.e. gaming> not gaming[ not really a day to day option.

Getting coil whine is pretty much chance and [usually] just has to be endured (gluing doesn't always work and changing the power draw rather dictates what you use the computer for{the computer dictates what you do not you deciding}.  You could try different PSU/card combinations.  I know you shouldn't have to "suck it up" but sometimes you have to be realistic.

Just read the bit about you getting an RMA (Newegg must want to keep excellent relations with their customers).   You lucky dog.

What are next weeks lottery numbers? ;)

Didnt you just get your 7990?

What are you going to do with the money? buy a different GPU?

Because if you buy another 7990 you will probably get coil whine again...

yep, and I'm definitely not buying another one lol. But I'm deciding between

1) Z97 Board + Xeon

2) GTX 970

3) Custom Loop + 9590

Option 2 will definitely impact my performance the most, but option 3 would be a fun project :)

it will work with your mobo

but even with a OC FX, your CPU will limit the potential of the dual 280Xs

I will say a single 290X will be a great pairing for your CPU because of Mantle :)
