Hi guys,

My little brother has 100$ to spend and that is all on a GPU. He came to me for suggestions but honestly, I wouldn't know what to recommend him beyond this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487045

So I've come here seeking your help out. Budget max is 100$ (end price must include tax and shipping). He recently got a new PC as an upgrade from his laptop from 2008. Prebuilt and got it for free as a gift. It is an HP Pro 3500 MT I believe. Only his is slightly updated from the original, like more RAM and a better PSU instead of the poo they put into it.

The GPU must be bought from either Newegg, Amazon or TigerDirect (though I would love it if you didn't use the later).

Thanks for reading and any help you might provide. :)

edit

In case it matters, the monitor he has is a Samsung S24C230L.

You can get a used 660 for about $100 on ebay which would be faster than any new GPU at that price point by a good bit. Another alternative would be a used 7850.

@GeeZillion

You are correct. :)

He can only have 100$ as a gift from someone else, and it will be ordered online as soon as he finds one. So saving up is not an option. That means used isn't an option either. :( This is coming from grandparents and I don't know if your grandparents are the same but...

What would a budget of 120-130$ get then? Would it get something with at least 2GB of RAM? If an extra 20-30$ could do wonders, maybe telling it to our grandparents will change their mind on the small budget.

it can only be $100 with shipping and tax humm the 260x is like $109 right now i think and the 260 is like $100 i think and a 250 isn't really worth it

I think we can cover shipping if it isn't too much.

So the R7 260x is his best option @ 100$? Does it matter which one/model?

If you get a used GPU make sure its an NVIDIA one, not AMD. A lot of people are parting out their old mining rigs, so you'd get something that was running at 100%, 24/7.

Wait till boxing day though for some sales. I was able to get a 750ti for 120 (100 after mir) in Canada, where prices are 10-20% more expensive than us.

the cheaper new R7 270x I couldn find is the http://www.amazon.com/XFX-R7-260X-Graphics-R7260XZNJ4/dp/B00FSC5MMQ/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1419238890&sr=8-8&keywords=R7+260x or if you can't do the extra $9 then go with this it's pretty much the same just the 260X is like 10% better. So this is the r7 260 and it's the OC (over clocked) edition and its $99 http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R7-260-1GD5-OC/dp/B00I5HIVTM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1419238890&sr=8-7&keywords=R7+260x

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, good news! My grandparents were curious to know what a 150$ (tax and shipping not included) budget would get them. So far they have the R7 260x on the list:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150688&cm_re=R7_260-_-14-150-688-_-Product

I told my grandfather about this community and he said ask them what they think about the GTX 750 Ti 2gb version:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487024&cm_re=GTX_750_Ti-_-14-487-024-_-Product

Also what wattage PSU he should get for each card. He was looking at a 550w PSU from XFX:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Your input is greatly appreciated. This was supposed to be a Christmas gift so if I can get it out to him fast, that would be great. :)
