GTx 970 hands down

SIDE NOTE:

if you can get your hands on a 780 for less than a 970, buy the 780, there not much different in terms of performance.

My Main Build: NZXT S340 - NZXT Kraken X31 - Crucial MX100 256GB - i5 4460 - Gigabyte Z97P D3 - Kingston HyperX Red 8GB - MSI Nvidia GTX 780 3GB - Corsair LL & HD RGB Fans, Corsair Lighting Node Pro.

And for a reason totally not related to performance, the 280x will not support freesync,  which means if you go that route then in the future you will have to upgrade your card again if you want dynamic sync.  With the nvidia card you'll only have to get a new monitor.  This could be fixed if you want to consider the 290 instead.

GTX 970 eats the 280x for breakfast quite handily. But it's way more expensive. You pay for what you want. are you trying to game at 1080p or 1440p? because the 280X will max out pretty much every game at 1080p and the 970 will do the same for 1440p. Depends on what you're going for.

Nice thread, it's like asking which of these 2 cars is faster in a drag race.

970.  But don't get an FX8, it will limit you in some games, and bottleneck that high end of a GPU.  Look into getting a locked i5 as a minimum, it costs less, or the same as an FX8.
