As of now, for gaming, not really, if you're speaking from a 'bang for your buck' perspective. If you have the money to blow then sure go ahead.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Absolutely yes.

Since you have two 980s don't have the expectation of running every game maxed out, you'll have to maybe turn it down to high and AA off/2x  to get consistent 60fps in new AAA titles (though AA isn't really that noticeable at 4k).

2 980s drive 4k well, so if you could maybe shell out some more cash for a better panel, then yasss 4k is so bootiful :3

I think its worth it. I have a 4k panel with 2 780ti's and its enough to drive games at 60fps on high and sometimes ultra. You might want to consider the swift as well, since you have 2 980's you could potentially get close to 144fps and experience very smooth game play.

if you were doing a new rig with the 9 980s, which monitor the swift or the xb280hk would you pick?

4K monitors are getting better, faster, and cheaper every few months.

Already Dell has released a 24inch AND 27inch 4K IPS monitor, and cost less than any 28inch TN 4K monitor currently released, by 100$.

It is a matter of time before companies adjusts their price for their 4K monitor. So, perhaps a price drop after the holidays is expected.

We are still waiting for reviews on the Dell IPS 4K monitos, but the specs looks very good.

Where? I recently bought my monitor (Acer B286HK) for $350, some got it as low as $300... Sure it was on Black Friday but I didn't see the Dell monitors going down to $200. Hell, their 30Hz 4k monitor is still $450.

In Canada, the Acer monitor is 680$, and around 500$ in the U.S. Used to be 800$ US/Canadian, but it looks like price drop already started to occur. Hence my point.

Pricing errors don't count.

Anyway, here is a link to the monitors:

600$ for the 24inch: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=860-BBFF

700$ for the 27inch: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=210-ADOF

Both are true 8-bit IPS panels, pre-manufcature color calibrated with report sRGB profile, and have a 6 or more dead pixel coverage with no zone or distance policy, 1 or more bright/stuck pixel coverage as well, Dell pays shipping both sides, and you get to keep the monitor while waiting for the replacement to arrive. So yes, despite 4K, with the massive number of pixels, only 6 dead pixel will warrant the ability to get a replacement. Fully adjustable and solid stand.

Pretty aggressive if you ask me.

It wasn't a pricing error at all, it was just a good deal (Amazon had it for under $400 as well).

Anyways, I was hoping there would actually be a $400-500 IPS 4k display, but I guess not. I'm not going to pay an extra $350 for IPS, but that's just me.

I know a lot of people would though, and it's still a good deal at $700; but TN 4k monitors are no where near $800 now, for the US at least.

PLEASE HELP!

Can 2 980s easily drive games at 4k with ultra settings?

that is what I want to know too

For a lot of newer games, no. You'll likely have to turn the settings down to high for consistent 60+ fps in a lot of games.

I'd wait (actually am waiting) for the 300 series before I'd invest in 4k gaming if you plan to play every game maxed out for the next few years.

Honestly, I would pick the Swift. All the reviewers, including @LinusTech says that it has slightly better picture quality and color reproduction. It's also a lot faster at 144hz, even moving Windows around on the desktop will appear smoother. I think 4k is very nice but the hardware for it aren't quite good enough yet. I still experience many issues with mine like terrible backlight bleed, weird vertical tearing down the middle, and the monitor not waking up from sleep.

what about two 970s with g-sync at 1440p 144hz?

That would probably be your best bet, atm 4k has really bad price/performance if you want to max out every game. Two 970s aren't going to get you 144fps on every game at 1440p, but they'll definitely get you close and with G-Sync you'll have a great gaming experience.

4k monitors are relatively cheap, we just don't have the hardware to max out games at a reasonable manner yet. Hopefully we'll see the 380(x)/390(x) soon and maybe they'll be ridiculously amazing at 4k (which they probably will be).
