Can you unlock Nexus 5s from USA in UK?

So could you unlock the carrier on an american Nexus 5? To Vodafone in the UK?

I'm slightly confused by your question.

 

Is the Nexus 5 locked to any particular carrier? If not, you should just be able to use your VodaFone SIM?

An unlocked phone is an unlocked phone. Just need to check the phone has the correct bands to be able to be used in the UK.

It's locked, I'm not entirely sure by what carrier, my cousin in the US is coming down to the UK for a few weeks and offered me his phone.

The Nexus 5 is an unlocked device. Just be aware that there are 2 models of Nexus 5. The D820 version of the Nexus 5 is designed for North America and will connect to 2G, 3G or LTE on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The D821 version of the Nexus 5 is set up to work with the rest of the world. European users should have no problem with a 2G, 3G or LTE connection. But some of the Asian carriers that use different networks could pose a problem.

 
North America (D820)
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
 
Rest of World (D821)
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Once it's unlocked, sim compatibility with network providers in the UK won't be an issue. An issue will be that the US has a couple of different versions which support different bandwidths and may not work. for that reason. @shaazzaarr has kindly posted that the D821 version should work with our bands in the UK.

the nexus isn't a locked phone.

it's either the D820 model or the D821 model, you just need to see which one he has and what bands your local carrier is using to see if it would work

There is no locked Nexus 5.
