GTX 970 SLI vs R9 290X Crossfire

What should i get for money value and FPS per $.

I was about to buy a pair of GTX 970 when i saw on recent GTX 980 Classified Review on LinusTechTips channel that the 290x is really close to the GTX 970.

I might do a bit of an overclock on the cards, so thats a point for Maxwell, but the 290X is cheaper...

Does anybody have a chart with an FPS per $ on this cards?

What would be your recomendations and why?

Thanks,

290X is really cheap ATM. So if price/performance ratio is everything to you, then 290X should be better in that case.

^This.

Their pretty close performance wise, almost neck and neck UN-noticible, give or take a few frames here and there.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Price/performance would be 290X, MSI 290X Lightning is around $320 right now

I would recommend 970's in SLI since you would use less power and they would run cooler.

The r9 290x's in crossfire would be cheaper but you would get more heat and power consumption.

They both perform pretty similarly.

290x CF is more powerful than 970 SLI, though I personally would go with the 970s as I try keeping power usage low, and prefer nvidia.

The thing is that 970 SLI will probably give you less trouble with heat and I would say there is quite some value to that. If you have a very well ventilated case or watercool those puppies, go for 290Xs....why not.

I would probably get the dual gtx 970's. 2 r9 290xs puts out a lot of heat, and uses a lot of power.

The 970s will perform better than two 290xs while running cooler, quieter, and using less power.

Also disregard the overly expensive 970s used in the pricing ^^^ you can get a 970 for $330 and just overclock it to the same or better performance.

on you're psu you can't run 2x290X's so the 970 are better value, because you dont have to get a new psu

Gtx 970s all the way, it should not even be a question. The 970s will run much cooler and quieter, and draw ALOT less power(the power difference is insane), cooler temps = better clocks less downlocking etc.

Maxwell 9 series overclock like beasts, and they are very easy to overclock if you get even a half decent card you are looking at 1500mhz boost @ stock voltage.

Then you have DSR to take advantage of the 970s(works really well in alot of games and looks alot better than aa) or you have the new mfaa.

My Lightning runs cool, quiet, uses more power but if the power supply can handle it then its not really an issue.

A $330 970 doesnt have the better cooling (ACX, Windforce, etc.) so expect it to be louder when OC and under load (just like a 290X)

As far as CF 290X's i cant comment, yet. Hopefully i will have another Lightning soon :)
