Alienware Alpha "Steam Machine" $499 at Midnight - Core i3-4310T, GeForce GTX 860M 2GB GPU, 4GB RAM (Worth it or eh?)

Not sure how successful the Alienware Alpha will be, but there's a $50 discount coming in just a few hours. At the stroke of midnight Eastern antonline will drop the price for the two base model Alienware Alpha's. They have 150 in stock for each configuration.

Some notes:

  • These deals go live at 12AM Eastern on 11/26 - or if you're west cost 9PM Pacific on 11/25.
  • Quantity is at 150 for both units.
  • Seller is antoline (site), a relatively large computer distributor

The Alienware Alpha technically is not a Steam Machine since the Steam OS never released back when it was suppose to this Summer, but still a relatively low price tag for the specs.

Note that the GTX 860M is a MOBILE GPU and I think its comparable to a GT 660? (nvm maybe a GT 650?)

Lastly the hard drive sucks, should swap out for a SSD.

I've read a few reviews and they seem ehhh so honestly if you're technically proficient and don't care about the Alpha UI, this is a small cheap/chassis to upgrade outta.

Gizmodo isn't exactly a place for hard tech analysis but his review seems well rounded.

well WHEN the Steam OS comes out, it will be compatible. but yeah for now its just a Windows machine with Dell's Alpha UI and Steam Big Picture mode.

At least now they are giving out the Info about the GPU....

Yeah before it was all just mystery "Maxwell" GPU but turns out its just a GTX 860M (no idea on the actual clockspeed etc) but its a mobile GPU at the end of the day.

Makes sense since its in such a small chassis, though.

Nope. I'm never ever ever ever going to use a Dell product. (Unless it's at school...)

Give it to me for free, I'll likely sell it still in it's own packaging.

why

My Inspirion Mini 10z broke down 3 times in a year, I had aftermarket warranty yet they say that it couldn't be covered. (Bullshit)

My XPS tower broke down in 3 years.

Nope, nope nope

Meanwhile, my Samsung from 10/11 years ago? Still functional to this date with only a HDD replacement.

Doesn't that tell you something?

PSU fail?

Output fan at the back failed, causing unnecessary heat buildup

CPU fan (not intel's) failed frying my CPU. (literally, I don't know what happened)

Then a PSU fail in which I called in, and they were like "go ahead and fucking sue us" so I gave up.

Even if Michael S. Dell sends me a handwritten letter apologizing about the inconvenience, I would reply with a "fuck you" and still never buy from them again.

But yeah, their monitors aren't bad.

Well, uh...

There's one side of the arguement.

OT:  It's reasonably-priced, which is a first from Alienware.  I wonder how upgradable it is.

I think you can put in more RAM and swap out the HDD, that's about it.

Can't tell if CPU is soldered on but the GPU is probably along with the motherboard since its a mobile GPU.

The 860M is nothing close to the performance of a desktop 660...i had a 780M in my old laptop and it performed similar to a GTX 660 non-ti.... The 870M is slower than the 780M so there's no way the 860M can equal the 780M in performance... I'd say more like GTX 650

I might pick one up for a Steam box. It definitely looks better than most of Alienware products imo.
