NVIDIA's Multi Frame AA

Mush Brain

With the launch of Maxwell Nvidia are introducing the world to Multi-Frame Anti-Aliasing (MFAA). This new, Maxwell-exclusive anti-aliasing technique improves edge quality with a minimal performance cost, and helps you enjoy anti-aliased games at ultra high resolutions like 4K.

2xMFAA was meant to achieve 4xMSAA looks for 2xMSAA performance hit.

It usually is about 4xMSAA but sometimes it's inbetween 4x and 2x. I like it though, decent fps improvement at no cost (in both performance and looks)

Well this is disappointing. So basically it's like applying 2.5-3.5 msaa adaptive when you choose 2x msaa. It lowers performance less than 4x because you won't be getting 4x all the time. Booo.

It's the same quality at better performance. Go cry a river.

it's not though. It's variable quality. Variable performance. Their test clearly shows it's more demanding albeit not by much for not as good AA as just stepping up to 4x. It's not bad, I would do the same as ryan and just turn it on and forget it. But it's just disappointing.

The performance varies by about 11% from the mean. The quality is raised or lowered depending on the amount of detail in the frames themselves. It adapts to do more or less when worth it. In other words, you won't notice!

That was uncalled for, whether you thin his point is valid or not that's not a proper way to initiate a healthy discussion.

Honestly, sometimes I look at some comments and wish this isn't the forum Linus envisioned.

Oh come on! People will find the dumbest things to complain about, especially without experiencing it! Sometimes people need to be smacked upside the head (without inducing permanent injury of course).

I have worries that this will cause unstable framerates.

Probably not.

But I don't like things in motion to be less sharp then when standing still. That's gonna annoy me I can tell.

Oh well. It's optional. I'm hopefully getting a reference 970 soon, but OCUK is expensive, and I hear that some other places are carrying them soon so I'm holding out. Whenever I get my 970 I guess I'll have to try it out.

Disappointed by the white list, I hope that improves.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

What a shocker that an Nvidia 'technology' is useless...

Looking at you PhysX, FXAA, TXAA and GPU Boost. Only good thing is driver forced HBAO.

I dont understand why NVIDIA doesnt just support SMAA. Its far superior to MSAA and doesnt blur the image. I mean why reinvent the wheel?

The same reason we keep going back and optimizing algorithms. It can be done better, so it eventually will be.

Ummm, FX/TXAA are quite nice and i believe you can force them through the driver. GPU Boost? whats wrong with that exactly?

i do agree Physx libs should be opened, or atleast licenced to AMD...

FXAA is just a blur filter, TXAA is a very very demanding blur filter and GPU Boost does nothing but make a card harder to overclock because of all the stupid restrictions.

GPU boost is a great technology. idk what you see making cards harder to overclock, but i never had any problem doing it...

Not to mention you can turn GPU boost off if you're willing to go to OverclockersUK and follow a tutorial to override a card's BIOS.

never tried it, but it would be retarded to do it.

i have my gpu overclocked to (iirc) 1250, and boost at 1320, and i genuinly see it at close to 1400 most of the time...

If you turn it off, SOMETIMES you can break through some speed ceilings, but it's tough to do.

Do you really need AA at 4k?... When I play @ 5760x1080p I turn AA off as I just dont need it.

Still nice I suppose :D

at 1440/1600P it really becomes unnecessary, but at 1080/1200 I use 2x.
