How slow will SSDs be on IDE mode?

terrytek

So, my dad is planning to get 2 PNY Optima 120GB SSDs from Best Buy on Black Friday. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pny-optima-120gb-internal-serial-ata-iii-solid-state-drive-for-laptops/8191179.p?id=1219315690159&skuId=8191179 I am so excited, but there's one problem. I hear that SSDs perform best when the SATA controller is in AHCI mode. I don't have AHCI, just RAID and IDE. I'm just wondering, how bad will IDE affect my SSDs? Will it just nullify the effect of an SSD or can I still get some fast speeds out of it?

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

From my very minimal tests, it didn't affect benchmarks much at all. (Tested with a single V300 with 0 data on it)

Probably, I'm not 100% sure though due to my minimal testing, you'll want to get a second opinion.

Are you sure you tested it in IDE mode? It doesn't sound like it.

It wasn't really a 'test', I accidentally left it on IDE mode and after I formatted and switched it to AHCI I didn't notice a performance difference nor did I see a noticeable difference in crystaldiskmark.

You can mod some of the bioses, that dont support AHCI out of the box...

oh dear im very sorry i mean raid has almost all the features that ahci has and i am sure raid wont limit the speed of the ssd

So, it was like a hidden AHCI mode for me? I guess I can use it since I'm buying 2 of these SSDs.

basically yes ahci and raid are similar but you might have to use different drivers when installing windows on to a ssd in raid

Nah, I'm too lazy to reinstall windows onto my SSDs.

It's probably worth noting that your SSD won't have TRIM if you use IDE mode. More info on TRIM can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_%28computing%29

You're wrong. It's confirmed Microsoft drivers will support TRIM on SSDs in IDE mode.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that, thanks for telling me :)

Edit: it seems that you won't suffer much if at all from running the SSD in IDE mode.

IDE mode itself isn't such a problem, its the lack of NCQ that kills random (and some sequential) performance.
