My theory of why PC sales are going down.

asim1999

when Apple and other companies claim that tablets and smartphones will replace desktops, they are correct ( to an extent(.

They claim that PC sales will go down significantly and IMO it is for one reason: PC building.

PC building is quite a niche market where people can customise a system to their needs (e.g, i5 for gaming, i7 for produuctivity) and so on. This is why prebuilts are becoming obsolete, since people have specific needs when it comes to desktops, and desktops are not really necessary for simple tasks, and are now more geared towards more intensive use such as gaming and extreme productivity ( video editing and rendering) so they can be fully customised.

Thanks to people like linus, the PC has been refined into a more specific market, with individual needs and budgets being different and diverse. Hence more people are taking the chance of building their computers (and are mostly ) loving it.

Thanks to linus and others for opening people's eyes to custom PCs and making the market grow significantly.

that's all i have to say for now.

IKR

i meant prebuilts for general use, not for specific usage models

thats why tablets and smartphones rule that field since they are so much simpler and easier for basic tasks (email, internet browsing, skype, etc).

It's best not to be contradictory and wrong at the same time.

You're saying PC sales are dying, but improving because of X reason. You're also saying prebuilts are becoming obsolete, that's far from the truth.

Somewhat agree...

I'd also like to add something:

Corporate users are shifting to the "thin client model" for most clerical tasks which don't need a lot of power... This means that you can have really low-end machines for the employees and have all the processing power and storage concentrated on the server... This could also spell the death of big brand prebuilts with the non-techies being the remaining possible consumers, but then again, it'll compete with the laptops and tablets...

I could only just about translate that back into English, to be honest.

You could have replaced that whole paragraph with just:

Those people who were using pcs for internet browsing are now buying tablets instead.

But then that wouldnt be relevant to my intended topic:  pc building

Those people who were using pcs for internet browsing are now buying tablets instead. Building custom a custom pc is becoming more and more common.

I've been saying something similar for a little while now..

There will be a specialization of the desktop PC market, in which gaming enthusiasts and professionals will get specialized performance PCs, and the average consumers will probably just be perfectly happy with generic phones/tables/ultrabooks.

Of course, even more recently there's been a little bit of a slowdown of the tablet market and a corresponding increase in the PC market. Maybe our assumptions about the future of PCs aren't exactly correct?

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

PC sales could be higher if we get better ports for upcoming games. Better ports would mean better performance on entry-level and mid-range hardware. This way people who don't want to spend a lot more than what the consoles are available will be encouraged to buy PCs over consoles.
