HDD ATA covert to sata1/2/3?

Go to solution Solved by WinNut,

This card offers 4 SATA II ports and 2 eSATA II ports and supports RAID also. It does plug into a PCI slot.

I have a VERY old dell desktop with an old WD600 60gb hard drive. This drive had failed and just spins up making a weird noise. The connector on it and the motherboard of the dell are ATA connectors. I want to turn the old computer into a nas with a larger hard drive.

Is there a device like that of witch this guy shows off that will be able to plug into the motherboard so I will be able to use an old sata3 1TB hard drive? It doesn't really matter about the speed of the drive, it will be mainly for backups.

A quick search on Amazon/Ebay should give you a bunch of good results...

Oh lord...IDE.

I wouldn't plug a SATA III drive into an IDE port, it would bottleneck like crazy. Buy a PCI SATA card.

Wow thanks, didnt even think of that, but how do I know what cards are pcie and pci, it only has the old pci slots?

Good ole classic click when IDE drives boot up. They need to go away forever and never come back.

I will admit that IDE cables have good uses, when we were dismantling old computers in the lab at school I wrapped one around my finger to avoid cuts from the case. It was quite cumbersome to work like that tho.

Would something like this work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815124006

Or be prone to failure because it's cheap?

No, they should stay and stay forever. I love that iconic click.

That would work fine, but it doens't seem to offer RAID, which you might want in a NAS solution.

Says in Newegg's description "raid 0 and 1 ready" I know what they are, but do you think it does/does not? I don't really know old technology xD

Well if it says it's ready then it probably just needs to be enabled.
