O.K so 40+40=80, 80 x 0= 0, 0+1= 1. But that answer is not correct. x comes before + so it is 40x0, + 40+1. So 41.

Wat... No it isn't?

40 + 40 x 0 + 1

40 x 0 first

leaves 40 + 1

41

I always forget order of operations damnit. Part of the reason I hate math

..how..

No parentheses, was thinking "no parentheses, start left to right". Again, hate math so much, even did it with a calculator and got 41. >.<

If no parentheses and multiplication sign, start there.

:P

I still don't see why it's done like that. I've never understood how it made sense to start in the middle of a problem rather than from left to right, unless there are parentheses.

Because. I had my teacher explain it to me once, but like all classes I never listened.

but WHY. Parentheses I get, but multiplying and dividing before adding and subtracting makes no sense to me.

To be honest, I do not know why. In school, I just learned why the rules are, not why they are (then again, I never paid attention in anything but History and Band).

Math doesn't care where you start. You will always get the same answer (as long as you do it right)

Not true, using the "order of operations" you get the answer of 41 to the OP's problem, however if you do it from left to right you get

40+40=80

80x0=0

0+1=1

Think of it this way. You have to keep like with like. This make sense? And multiplication is just a shorthand way of doing addition. So you have to do the multiplication first in order to get it into a form of addition.

Example: So 5 x 3 is actually 5 + 5 + 5. It means add three fives together. So now that we have done the multiplication, everything is in terms of addition (hence like with like)

So 5 x 3 + 5 is actually 5 + 5 + 5 +5

^^ NB! Don't apply this logic to more complicated problems. It will probably breakdown at some point. Just use the rules you are taught.

And it doesn't matter which way you arrange it. 5 x 3 + 5 == 5 + 3 x 5 == 5 + 5 x 3 == (5 x 3) + 5. They all give you the same answer.

Edit: When I mean math doesn't care which way you do it, I mean you can rearrange the equation and still get the same answer.
