Please help me choose...

WhiteSkyMage

Hey,

Which would be a better choice in terms of performance wise?

Get a GTX 970 4GB now and SLI it next year,

wait for GTX 970/980 8GB and SLI it next year

or get a 970 now and then change it next year with next gen Maxwell (20nm).

note my screen would be 1440p and I am choosing between GTX 970 FTW/HOF (i still want to see reviews for Galax HOF), if i go with 970 of course, or an EVGA GTX 980 8gb card.

4 or 8 GB?

Re-read the OP, slowly.

He asked which of the following to pick -

  • A GTX 970 or GTX980 4GB model now, and SLI in the future.
  • Wait for a GTX970 or GTX980 4GB and SLI it in the future.
  • Get a GTX 970 4GB now, and replace with 20nm Maxwell when it's out.

Ah shit. Didn't see that thread mate.

And learn to quote.

And @Krytopsy It was a rumor (i think)

Ok... looks like there isn't much of a choice here for me.

It will only be debates but in the end Nvidia is the one who decides.

I will wait till the end of November. If there are no 8GB cards, I will just get a 970 and get one more next year and SLI them.

I am however really concerned about the fact that 970s have so much trouble with that coil while I keep hearing bad reviews about. I hope that doesn't kick me to jump to GTX 980s.

(IMO) it's better to get a stronger single card than sli 2 weaker cards. I think Linus said it before.

BTW What the hell are you gonna do with all of that ram. It seems pointless to me unless you were doing something crazy with it.

I wanna be sure that if i get SLI, 4GB won't become a bottleneck. Also, AA on 1440p screen and use some textures/mods like the 6GB requirement one from the Shadow of Mordor and Skyrim mods.

Didn't Linus say - "get the highest price card you can afford and then SLI it"? which basically means, if i can't afford 980, then get 970 and SLI it...

4GB will be a bottleneck, I do get bottleneck. No coil whine here.

There are only a few games that are so badly coded that they don't benefits that much of SLi.

I know, 4GB really isn't enough and later on games will get even more memory hungry...

Do you know which ones are they? Just for me to know. I will just switch off one card in case I play one of them?

Oh wait wait, that's another thing about the 8GB cards. Remember last year when 6GB 780s showed up? EVGA made a "step up" program where if you bought a 3GB card you can change it with 6GB.

So even if I get a 4GB card now in December, I don't think EVGA will miss out this year to do the same thing - ima just go and get my 8GB card. Besides Nvidia has to counter AMD's 300/400 series in like Q1 next year and R9 290X will soon have 8GB version too. So if not in December, there will be an 8GB version, maybe in like Jan/Feb next year.

Battlefield 4, Metro, are some of the few games I tested that get bottlenecked on 4 GB card right now.

Don't expect a good card version from EVGA step-up program, usually they will step up your graphic but for one of the worse version like reference design or 1 fan model, etc.

Oh god, that's a clear loose  Ah this is just sad... ahh dang it.

What screen do you use (resolution)? 1440p with MFAA will be a bottlenecked too the way you make it sound...

loll do you remember when most people were saying 2 GB VRAM is enough and anything over is overkill ? lol BF4 isn't unplayable because of the VRAM limit I hit, I just have to turn off many filters and it's working but yeah lol
