Who has the most overkill setups for the intended use?

asim1999

one of our corworkers was told to get a cpu for the office pc to run a beamer programm..

he bough 2x i7 4790k

2xi7 4790k? why 2 pcs for a beamer programm? and what is a beamer programm? :D

Gonna contribute to the thread:

My friend has an i5 3570 non-k, a z77 Mobo, a gtx 770, 16gb of ram and pretty much plays nothing and even uses his pc rarely. He plays, maybe 1h of garrys mod/week and maybe 2h of minecraft/week. Hes watching a lot of youtube on his lg g2. My mom uses her pc more than he does.

That's what I'm saying. Winning the silicon lottery. How is this so far fetched to you that you call bullshit? It's not hard, like 10% of Puerto Rico i5-3570Ks and 3770Ks will break 5Ghz.

My 2500K does 5ghz and 5.2ghz, 5.2 is stable but too much for the H100, 5.0 was 85c under heavy CPU burn in (AIDA Extreme)

My CPU's overkill, given the fact that I haven't used it for computation in years. Still, it's not overkill in the sense that the single-core performance isn't really anything to shout about these days, so more cores aren't unwelcome.

R9 280X only to play minecraft with shadermod  Not sure if its overkill. Getting 40fps with it.

Yeah Sandy Goes further. 5Ghz on Sandy is like 4.7Ghz on Ivy.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

When putting a 2nd Windforce 290 in my rig, for my 27" 1080p monitor, is complete overkill without using downsampling.

My mate who only plays World of Tanks (with his 1000Mhz HD7950)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I know someone who has an absolutely fantastic set of speakers (cant remember the make, its a good one just not sure as to which one) anyway the speakers put a massive hole in his account and all he uses them for is the occasional youtube video......... It breaks my heart seeing such things gathering dust. A pair of cheap logis or other would have done him just fine.

I would consider my grandpa's pc to be overkill for what he does.

He does light web surfing, backs up pic's he took onto his pc,and checks his email, you could do all this with a single core,1gb,and onboard video(i know cause i have pc's like that and they work perfectly for it).

Yet hes bought an HP with a C2Q q6700,8GB ram,8600GT and 2x 500GB in raid for 1TB of space, and he bought around 2008-2009 when the chip was only a year or 2 old.

Runs notepad like a boss.

Though there are fringe cases when I actually do require the power.

How about most underkill? My rig is from the P4 era (xeons) and I want to ply modern games. BF3 is completely unplayable. :(

my mum's friend has a 4000$ macbook pro laptop he bought in 2011 (i7 quad core cpu 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 69 (something something) graphics, 256GB SSD) and just uses it for "internet browsing"

my friends friend bought a GTX TITAN (When it was new) just to play some MMORPG (EVE?) and Battlefield (only 2 games he plays), turned out it was beaten in those by the GTX 690 and HD 7990.

I have a 7970GHZ 6GB on 1920X1200 Resolution. but i intend to run massive texture packs on skyrim and i saw it used for about 15$ more than other 7970's so i thought why not.

Hey bro i like yo *vomits on you*

for example: running 4 980s in quad-sli for 1080p gaming. people might say my rig is overkill, but i need a solid productivity machine as i am doing computer studies for GCSE and A-level and want to pursue this as a career.

so, who here has the most overkill rig for their use?

Computer studies at GCSE level, atleast at my school, is basically just Microsoft office.

A-Level really isn't much different either as the work you do at college uses program's that work fine on relatively cheap PCs - so yeah I think your rig is overkill.

Anyway, I was gonna get a 5820k and 980 for CS:GO and DayZ/Arma but I decided against that.

nah you totally need dual 980s for CS:GO it's super hard to run dude. I'm only getting like 280ish fps its not even over 9000 dude!

Also my rig 5820k and dual 980s with custom loop cooling for (I'm sick of consoles and never want to look back) gaming

I am the one who goes bump in the night... usually making a sandwich.

My i7 is some serious overkill. I don't end up pushing it all the time with all that I do, running Spotify, ten web pages and Leauge of Legends all at once... It only slows down when I am editing videos for school projects. While doing all the rest of that stuff.

That was true at the time, see my profile for most up to date specs. Honestly though, my CPU and cooling was old news a year ago

i hit 5ghz on my 4790k on air just fine at 85c at 1.4v to see if she would hit it and she does waiting to save up for a full water cooling kite to push it farther

You don't see that very often with haswell :(, devils canyon's TIM didn't do much, I am expecting overclocks that are similar to haswell in broadwell.

Also does the place the CPU is manufactured have such an impact on overclocks?

You can't tell which factory your CPU comes from? Or can you??

Because I am building my first PC, with a 4790k very soon and I want it to be good, I have a feeling that CPU's that are bought in the holiday season don't overclock as well as others, just have a bad feeling about it :(

Also the stores where I am buying from are raising the prices of unlocked CPU's and saying that they are discounted -_-

i hit 5ghz on air on mine
