One More PSU Question

Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

That's after rebate. I tend to try not to deal with the hassle.

Oh, ok. Get whichever is cheaper then.

Alright guys ordering my new PSU tomorrow and I've got one last question. I noticed the Corsair RM 650 is on sell for only $90. I was originally going to get the EVGA G2 750W, but I think the RM 650 will be fine. I'm probably not going to do crossfire. I'd rather just get a 960 when one comes out, but I want to overclock everything as much as possible. Will the 650W be enough for extreme overclocking? My specs are in my signature. Thanks guys.

If you're sticking with Nvidia then yes, the 970 takes 165w so a 960 should take less.

If you're going AMD (you said crossfire) as long as you're talking less than 280x then you're okay as well.

By the way, for Nvidia it's SLI, not crossfire ;)

650W is overkill even for single GTX 980 so you will fine though I would pick EVGA G2 750W if they are the same price.

Didn't mean to quote you twice. Sorry.

Right now I'm using a R9 280. In the future I might get a 960. I'm using an A10-7850K for my CPU.

For R9 280 even a 500W PSU is enough like for any single core GPU,

My 550W isn't enough when I overclock at all. It's a ThermalTake in case you're wondering.

wattage wise it will be more than enough, however i would still opt for the EVGA if they are priced similarly.

The RM650 is $20 cheaper.

single gpu*

I don't know of any single core gpus...

Thermaltake psus are mediocre at best. A decent 500w is already more than enough.

The capstone 750m is pretty overkill though--you could easily run a 280 cf off of it.

Well it is single *chip GPU then or call it whatever you want. Basicaly not something like R9 295x2 which is also single GPU with 2 "cores" GPU chips or whatever.

The 295x2 is 1 graphics card that has 2 gpus in cf with 5632 cores.

The gpu is the chip.

People misuse the abbreviation 'GPU'. The GPU is the processing unit inside of a graphics card (well, on the PCB), thus the 295x2 is a graphics card with 2 GPUs. Much like the 690.

I really need to improve my english in order to make my expresions of words better.

Single GPU => Single piece of hardware

Single GPU with 2 GPU chips = Single piece of hardware with two GPU chips on PCB (I said cores before but I admit that it is not really core and it should be called chip)

Thats all I wanted to say before. I knew all that, its just not making what I meant to say clear enough.

No, it's a single GRAPHICS CARD with 2 GPUS

So you refer to GRAPHICS CARD as to GC? Everyone is calling it a GPU and everyone knows when someone mention GPU that he means GRAPHICS CARD.

(Not saying that you are wrong but this is nitpicking in my opinion)

It's fine when used in most circumstances, but when discussing Titan Z's, 690's, 295x2 etc. its needed.

People who refer to the entire card as the gpu are incorrect. One of the reasons why people don't know the difference is because it's often not explicitly explained due to the interchangeability of the terms in many cases.

Calling the entire graphics card the gpu is similar to calling an entire PC a cpu.

You are completely right to differentiate between GPU and GRAPHICS CARD if you want to be very technical but I think that almost everyone on this forum will understand what you mean when you call R9 295x2 as Dual chip GPU instead of Graphics card with two GPUs.

I'd know what the person meant, I'd just prefer the dual GPU term.

Truce?

All right then, from now on I will call it properly just for you :P
