What is this on my res?

KWelz

I have had my Loop running for a couple weeks now and overall things seem good.   However I have noticed some sort of corrosion on the baffle in my res.

You can see it in the following photos.  It looks cloudy but you can not feel anything.  It will not rub off but will come off with my thumb nail.

Coolant is distilled water with a silver kill coil sitting in the res.

Possibly metal buildup.  If you have 2 or more different metals in the loop it can cause corrosion.  The metal that corrodes away has to go somewhere and can build up in places.

Try taking it out and scrubbing it.  Or put a little alcohol on a cloth and wipe it off.

Filled it with Distilled water.  Ran it for about 5 hours then drained and refilled.  Should I have done more?   I am far from an expert obviously...

That should have done it. I run the whole loop through with a few gallons of distilled water directly into the sink myself. I need someone to hold things for me obviously.

So that may not be the issue

Parts list please?

Right, but when you get new parts like acrylic reservoirs and radiators, you need to run water through the loop and into a sink or something in order to get rid of any gunk or particles/glue bits from the manufacturing process.

I'm just going to let you know that I never ran my loop with distilled water prior to filling and haven't had and issues. I've never heard anyone even say to do that. My opinion on your issue would be to drain and refill. Get all the crap out. Look for more crap in the res. If it comes again then there is a bigger issue.

People do that all of the time, OP even did it, though with the pump -.-. I wouldn't think it would cause a gunk issue like this, but if there's metal shavings in a radiator or glue bits in a reservoir, they can cause damage to the pump, so I always rinse before connecting the pump. I've only ever got something out like once personally, so it's optional I guess, and it would be an issue of cheap parts/bad manufacturing process.

I saw that a lot of people clean their res before use.  It made me nervous enough that I pulled the loop apart and cleaned the pump and CPU block.   That is actually when I noticed this.  When I add my second rad I will be flushing it first.

Well, it's a kit, so I assume there's not mixed metals, lol. Idk, unless someone comes up with an answer, I'd clean out the res, rinse the loop, and refill and see if it happens again. You have a silver coil, so not an issue there....is it plasticizer I wonder?

I see so me pople saying Masterkleer tubing is working fine for them with this issue, others saying this issue happened within weeks.
