ok thanks. so it doesnt make a difference?

Well more processors = more powerful but also more heat just like with CUDA cores.

so should i get a 290 or a gtx 970?

The 970 performs better than a 290x, so definitely get a 970 over a 290.

CUDA cores and stream processors are brand names for what are essentially processor cores. When comparing two cards of the same architecture (such as an R9 290 versus R9 290X), more cores do mean better performance. But between the R9 290 and GTX 970, the 970 is the superior (and more expensive) card.

thanks

 but which one?

depends on what you thinks looks better and what your budget is

also the gigabyte G1 performs a bit better than the rest of the brands

asus and msi have the 0rpm fan models which are the quietest ones of all

This would be my priority, personally. The Gigabyte G1 is only going to appear to be faster at stock clock speeds, and the 970 overclocks so well that its a shame not to do it yourself anyway.

Actually the Stream processing units are the "cores" of the GPU for AMD. CUDA cores are unlike stream processors in that they are only used in programs that support it. They are two different architectures and it isn't really that logical to compare them.

If you have the power and airflow to run it then a 290 is a better card for the money.

Yeah but the binned gigabyte chips will theoretically allow for a higher average overclock, but obviously this will depend on the chip.

It's the most comparable thing really.

Gotta correct you on that one. The 970 outperforms a 780 but the 780 has more CUDA cores (bcuz of their new memory compression stuff).

Gaming doesn't use CUDA cores though, which is why in things like rendering or video editing that supports CUDA, a 780 will still perform better then a 970 at stock speeds.

Based on Nvidia spec sheets, I think they just use the term "CUDA core" to refer to their actual processing cores, since that's that only type of core that they seem to list at all. You are correct about programs having to be designed to use the CUDA API, though.

Ye I know but ofcourse I mean within the same architecture.

Poor formulation for the lose :c

For AMD cards what do stream processing units?

AMD can compute OpenCL

Nvidia can compute OpenCL, CUDA, PhysX

AMD is better at OpenCL than Nvidia, but Nvidia has a wider range of processing "methods" which are used widely especially in professional rendering software.

That's about all there is to it.

I use a Lenovo T440: i5 4300U, 8GB RAM, 128GB Samsung 840 Evo, 14" 900p display and an external 23" 1080p passive 3D monitor. Extended 6-cell battery with internal 3-cell. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (I only use open-source software -- haven't paid for a single program yet).
