The 880 has less bass and is supposed to be more neutral sounding, the 990 focuses on treble and bass.

Imo the 880s would be more accurate, but may have less immersiveness because of the less bass.

not really a hifi type of guy but I have both of them.

 

I tend to enjoy the dt990 more in both gaming and music. it's just my personal taste. well I'm a open back headphone type of guy too and the dt880 are kinda semi open kinda stuff.

 

both will do you well. just buy whichever is available but for my personal taste I'm really enjoying the 990 more.

The 990s are also open. The 880s are "semi-open". Don't automatically assume 990 > 880 because the number is bigger. Same driver, different trimmings. I would probably prefer 880s over 990s.
