Microsoft loves Linux - Azure

GoodBytes

If they release an open-source (preferably GPL) version of Windows with the Linux kernel and full compatibility with Windows apps, I will switch to Windows on all of my machines.

All Apple operating systems contain huge amount of open source software. Blackberry is not comparable with a complete in-vehicle infotainment system.

It's certainly popular because of the license. To build a system you have to adapt things. You have to change and modify things in every part of the stack. From the kernel to the UI. That's only possible with open source software.

edit: I think I completely forgot embeded. Everything embeded which is big enough to run an OS and doesn't have real-time requirements runs linux.

You haven't heard of QNX then.

The apple link is untrusted according to my browser so I will not open it.

We know licensing has little to do with linux uptake, the license is free and windows costs but it is only in the last few years that linux has moved in the server realm and they are not moving in the client OS market.  Is this a result of it being open source or is it another part of Linux that makes it more appealing in specific cases?  For all we know it may have nothing to do with being open source but have everything to do with scalability for example.

EDIT: never mind I did some digging and found the answer myself:

Oh no, the certificat is untrusted!!11 Now it's as secure as http.

The license is the main reason. You have to modify the software stack. I don't care if you believe me or not, but that's how it is.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Microsoft developed their own Linux distro and offered it side-by-side as an alternative to Windows... That'd be fun.

Well Microsoft have a partnership with Canonical, the developers of Ubuntu, for the Azure platform. I'm sure they could work more with Canonical.

There have been rumours that Microsoft would buy ubuntu.

Am I the only one the got a hard on at the thought of MS's support network on a Linux OS?
