If you were building a home server for files and media and maybe geforce streaming in the future would you install a server motherboard and ECC ram or a beefier consumer board like a Sabertooth?

The high quality ASUS motherboards like the sabertooth are validated to run 24/7 under bad conditions like heat and dust. This will be more than enough for a home server.

If you wanted to eventually add a GPU what CPU would u put in it. I have the Pentium 20th Edition picked out right now but thats gonna run some games

Last home server I built was with a Sub- $100 AM3+ ASUS board, 16GB DDR3 Non-ECC, and a Dual-Core Phenom that is unlocked to 4 cores. 

 

 

24/7 for 3+ years. No problems. Running Plex for streaming HD Content, Used to run a beefy minecraft server, and also is our network backup for 4 PCs every night, as well as a network drive.

 

I'd say no need for even a sabertooth if you want to save the $$$. Now, if you needed 24/7 uptime for a database or website or rendering rig.... may want some server-grade stuff.

Server-grade boards are cheaper nowadays, and if you go for entry-level stuff they should have all the features you want. Personally if I was building a server from scratch I'd get a low-end i3/celeron/Xeon with ECC RAM (also not that pricey) and a cheap server board. You get the validation and ECC memory in exchange for the Audio, beefy VRMs and other gaming-oriented features that you'll never use in a server.

But for a home server anything goes - I won't use a sabertooth, probably a really cheap H81 board with all the ports you want...

I'm not sure about the prices for low end xeons, but I would try to get at least 4 cores for a home server, even if it was a used i5.
