I'm wondering what is a reasonable overclock you think I can achieve with this hardware:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz

MoBo: Asus P5Q Pro

Memory: 4x2GB OCZ DDR2 800mhz

Cooling: Cooler Master 120mm AIO Liquid Loop

2017 Macbook Pro 15 inch

Not exactly, you can always blck overclock. The multi is locked to 7.5 but the FSB can be upped from 333 MHz. You could bump the FSB up to 450 MHz and see if you can get 3375 MHz.

Usually FSB OCing leads to instability relatively quickly, leaving very performance gains.

that's it? I was hoping with liquid cooling, i could get around 3.8ghz

You can go higher, no one knows what your setup will do until you try.  ;) Tho be sure to drop your memory speed as upping the FSB will automatically overclock your ram too.

Fsb up on a q8400 got me from 2.66 ghz to 3.2 ghz no worries

you'll be lucky to hit 3.4ghz with that CPU and motherboard...3.2ghz would be more realistic.

You would have been better off with a Q6600 G0 stepping.

Achieving the overclock through FSB is a lot trickier, good luck!

No... you never OCed a pre-k processor before it seems...

its really easy just up the BCLK

but watch out! while increasing bclk you also overclock your memory , use the DRAM divider !

I still remember this :

Q6600 =

FSB 266 * 9 = 2400mhz +-  CPU CLOCK

FSB 266 = 800mhz +- DRAM CLOCK

if you had good memory you could do :

300*9= 2700mhz CPU clock

300= 900mhz DRAM

so you had a nice and quick overclock , BUT ! if you had bad memory or you went even higher you could set the divider to something lower like

lets say your ddr2 memory is rated for DDR2 800mhz but only goes to 860mhz and then gives BSOD´s.

you set your memory with an fsb of 266mhz to 667mhz memory , so now your memory is underclocked on STOCK CPU speeds!

if you then ran it at 300fsb it would run in the neighbourhood of 750mhz DRAM speed.

So you can go even higher with your FSB until you reach the cpu limit.

and lock your PCIE Clocks

as an overclocking noob, this seems extremely complicated....

is there somebody or somewhere that can give step by step directions to an 3.2ghz overclock?

actualy its notttt that complicated... will try to make a video for you later this evening.
