Graphics Card Issue or Driver Issue

Gpu is r9 280x windforce rev2

 

 

So after i reinstated my os in a fail attempt to install my ssd (No i don't have my os on it but i know the issue and know how to fix it, just dont want to get a new windows key just to make a iso) my displays would crash, causing my pc to crash, somewhat.

 

The crash would go somthing like my screens go black, it may come back and make weird colors on the screen and then it will go black again.

 

after this my pc is still on but i cant do anything and no matter how long i leave it it will not respond.

 

during one of the crashes i was watching a twitch stream and the audio continued in my headset until the colors appeared.

 

i was running the latest 14.9 drivers and the driver set before that and crashes still occurred,

 

there is also a switch beside the crossfire connectors and i dont know what that is for.

 

 

im not sure what it the issue is because when i run off my intel hd graphics and the gpu is out but drivers are still installed no crashes happen, and no crashes happen when i run off my gtx 645

Because your cards are unstable at the stock voltage and are crashing. Increasing the core voltage makes it stable, because, you know, its AMD.

And you can try reverting to 14.4 it had less issues.

i did run 14.4 and i still crashed so yeah thats not the issue, and i ran the card for 3 months at stock voltage and had no issues

Yeah sometimes the card will run fine but suddenly not work unless you increase the voltage. It's weird how GPUs wear out over time.

Just try increasing it by a bunch and see if they are stable, since its obviously not the drivers.

ok, msi after burner is the best tool for that right, i cuurently am running on my gtx 645 so it may be a while to change the voltage.

 

i also wont know if its stable or not because the card would crash just in chrome sometimes but others i could play games and be fine

ok so @Enderman you say that if i increse stock voltage i should be able to get it stable, right, im finally getting arround to it, dad didnt ship it out so im going to test it for the weekend

Yes, if increasing the voltage or underclocking the GPU doesn't work, then you should definitely RMA cause its dead

it appears that the voltage is locked on this windforce card in bios 2, should i switch to bios 1?

you can try, i dont see why it would be locked in one bios but not the other...

 

you can try underclocking if overvolting doesnt work

The switch near your connectors are for DUALbios, the one closer to your outputs/bracket is usually the performance one(more TDP allowance, more power, more noise), the one closer/facing to the 'backend power' connectors is usually the slower one.

 

Keep it on performance

I had your issues, had to Disable Powertune/Powerplay with MSI, this may work for you, but first always make sure you have a driver package cleanly installed.

^Experience from my older HD7950(280) not my current 290.

 

Download DDU (I have to use this now between drivers, never used to, but over time....between many driver changes trying to get it to work,... driver leftovers get stuck in the system) (Think Pizza crusts behind the fridge)

 

Uninstalled using WIndows normal methods... then running DDU (Asks to switch to safe mode on next boot, YES) then bam, safe mode, clear all nasty AMD leftovers.

 

Reboot

Install whatever drivers you want.

Few days later re-enabled it, works fine... These drivers can get 'stuck' on some things very easily.

FYI - This is a less than a week old W7 install.

 

DDU works wonders (Latest version of course) when you have issues.

 

Grab 14.4/14.9.1 Beta (a fixed 14.9) and try them again after using DDU & a reboot, open MSI, disable Powerplay, reboot, TEST.

 

You could also try updating your GPU bios to latest versions if not already

so far it has been stable, before it would restart/ crash at random but it is fine atm, going to stres test it for a while

well it apperas to have crashed again, not sure what is happening, will underclock and try again

 

also my card drops 2-5c just by turning on my fans
