I don't think that's a good idea. Being able to specify which version of Windows you are using is good for finding info about it, or when helping someone.

Just imagine someone calling support:

Person: "I need help changing the IP on my computer".

Tech support: "Okay Mr. Person, are you using Windows?"

Person: "Yes I am using Windows".

Tech support: "Okay, which version of Windows are you using?"

Person: "I am using Windows".

Tech support: "Yes but are you using Windows, or Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?"

Person: "I am using Windows."

 

It's just confusing. It boggles my mind that companies are so bad at naming things. Apple fucked up by calling the iPad 3 "the new iPad". HTC fucked up by calling their phone "One" and then had to resort to using the code names to separate the old One and the new One. AMD threw out their whole naming scheme and changed to some really weird one with R# and some other numbers. Nvidia has been busy making sure certain series of cards (like 300) just don't exist, and also adding suffixes which are confusing (Ti, Black and so on) AND having prefixes as well (GTX and GTS).

 

Microsoft please I beg you. Don't fuck this up. Just call it Windows 9. It's very logical (9 is newer than 8), easy to remember, easy to distinguish between the other OSes (if there is a big 9 in the logo people won't wonder which version they got) and you can name the next one Windows 10 (not the mess HTC is in with the One).

We already have a Windows 1. We don't need Windows One. Windows is too confusing, because there are plenty of those. I'd go with either Windows 9 or Windows IX.

It used to piss me off, now I just don't care, I don't know how old you are but I have noticed when you get to my age you either become bitter about the small things or become mellow and understanding.  Peoples attitudes piss me off, however their education/ability to be grammatically correct doesn't.

Yes. See, it just disappoints me when I see someone like you who is clearly intelligent and has many intelligent, insightful things to say on a variety of topics makes such careless errors. I think it varies from person to person.

 

However you are right in a certain sense because when people have the wrong attitude AND bad grammar I don't care most of the time. At that point my mind says "it's just ignorant people." If they don't give a shit enough to be smart about what they write, they obviously don't give a shit enough to make what they write grammatically correct.

I actually make grammatical errors quite a lot.  Usually when I am rushed but feel a response is necessary.  However there are other times when I proof read several times, sometimes I use snippets of the queens English. Then one finds oneself composing a reply not easily understood.

I think the TH = Thresh-hold.  I think they will call it Windows 9 on release though, or maybe TH.  But they will never tell anyone TH stands for Threshhold.
