Hello good folk of the LTT community!

I just spent a good deal of money on a Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 and a Corsair RM750 (Yes it's overkill for one card but I'm planning to add a 2nd card down the road and I like me some headroom). The question I want to ask is whether the RM750 is a good PSU or not. I always thought the RM series were pretty good but I saw some crushing reviews about the RM750 and 850 concerning a thermal issue and shutting down. Can I get some clarification on this because I could not really find specifics on this.

The RM series is a bit overpriced for what you get, Corsair -.-

About the issues you are talking about I have no idea though

I got it with a discount putting it slightly below the EVGA G2 750W which made it worth it IMO

You got a good deal, even though that EVGA is one of the best IMO

I know but the delivery time was unknown and I couldn't wait on it.

Edit: I'm allowed to send it back for no reason for a full refund in the first 2 weeks, I could return it if the G2 comes in store before that period :D

The thermal issue is situational and is something that you won't likely see in a real world usage (putting in a hotbox with no air flow).

Not that it matters anymore, as that version had been discontinued and fixed sometime last year after HardOCP made note of it. You should have gotten one with the fix.

My RM is great I have the 1000 watt but the build materials are suppose to be the same. One reason I went with Corsair vs EVGA is that it shares the wiring with the AXi series which means the companies making custom wiring sets for AXi series also work with RM series. EVGA custom wire sets were way more.

We can build it, we have the technology!

The thermal issue was on the 750-850w version of the RM series which is build on a different platform than the RM1000. So your experiences doesn't really imply here.

The Corsair cable set is actually more expensive than the EVGA, as you need to buy the 24-pin connector separately for $19.99 - totaling $99.98 for the entire set while the EVGA are $89.99.

The cables you are referring to are the manufacture offered ones that are only one color, which EVGA only offers red. Multi color sleeved custom sets purchased thru companies like FrozenCPU perfer Corsiar and Seasonic in pricing verse EVGA. You have proof they don't share capacitors and other sourced products between RM series. Because most manufactures share source products on same series keeps cost down. RM was marketed to being selective with components in the PSU.

I stand corrected last I check it was only red for the models I was looking at and still one color only verse custom sets which I have found seem a bit cheaper for Seasonic and Corsair PSU's maybe due to demand being higher vs EVGA options out there. Excluding Sata/Molex cables FrozenCPU up to three color sleeved sets are 119.99 for Seasonic/Corsair for certain models EVGA were more expensive.

Basically, you mean aftermarket sleeved cables.  I didn't see any EVGA custom aftermarket cables, so I thought you were talking about the actual OEM sleeved cables. Either way, I've never been interested in individually sleeved cables, so I never bothered looking into the custom ones from those like Lutro0 Customs and those are often expensive, while the cheaper ones may be using a smaller gauge wire. But like I said, I don't look at them too often, so I can't really comment on it.

You are asking me for proof about the difference between the 1000w and the rest? I'm not talking about how the RM series uses CapXon or LTec electrolytes capacitors, the same rifle bearing fan from Hong Hua, etc. across the entire line (although, I don't think LTEC is part of CWT's AVL). What I'm talking about is the platform that it is build on. The 450-650w variant is manufactured by Channel Well Technology (CWT) based on the PUQ-G platform. The 750-850w is custom platform made by Chicony, while the 1000w version is also a CWT build PSU but based on the different CSH platform. While they may share similar components such as the capacitors and fan, they are still very much different (the 750-850w even had a larger heatsink and a metal plate on the entire solder side of the PCB unlike the CWT build units).

So as I stated before, the thermal issue that the OP is concerned is an issue to the 750-850w units alone. Corsair even made an announcement on it. http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=123484

It doesn't matter either way, as the issue had been fixed with the latest revision, and they are decent mainstream units.

Who cares about cables? You guys are comparing a CWT unit to a Super Flower unit. There is no competition: The EVGA G2 series are some of the finest units on the market and the Corsair RM series are not.

It's a Chicony unit. More specifically, we are comparing a mainstream custom platform from Chicony to the high-end Super Flower Leadex Gold unit. Between the two, as you have stated, the G2 is indeed superior.

I know that the RMs are made by two different ODMs, including CWT and Chicony. I don't recall who makes what wattage. In either case, Super Flower's Leadex is the way to go.

the rm series are ok, but the evga ones are superior. however if you got the rm at a discount i guess it's more worth it then.

Yeah, I seem to neglected to mentioned this. Since you already bought it, I would say just keep it. Unlike here in the US, you got the RM750 for cheaper than the 750w G2. By returning it, you are essentially spending more on the G2, because you need to pay for shipping cost to get it back to their store, subject to a restocking fee, and then buy the G2 in full plus shipping.

If I return in the 2 week period where I may return it for a full refund for no reason then I do not have to pay for shipping (I get a prepaid label :D). If the EVGA G2 750W comes back in the store before that time I probably will do this. Besides, jonnyguru reviewed the RM850 (which is damn near identical) and http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=369. He gave it a pretty damn good score
