How much better is an i7 over an i5 for gaming, is it worth spending the extra?

MPX309

Now hear me out a minute. . . It's inevitable I'm going to replace this CPU before the end of the year. . . I understand usually the logic is buy an i5 and spend a little bit extra on GPU instead, but lets for instance say I've gone as far as getting as good GPU I will get (which I have) atleast for another 2/3 years or so I'd imagine but in terms of wanting abit more FPS in games, is there much difference between i5 and i7, or would it be wasted coin?. I only really use Photoshop aswell and may look into making promo videos for people but that isn't for certain at the moment.

It's just moving from one i5 to another seems abit pointless. . . I've given up on the whole X99 dream, I've decided I don't need that level of performance, but a Devils Canyon i7? between those to scenarios seems a little logical. . . help me out tech gurus

For gaming there is very little to no performance gain. If you're going to use photoshop and other editing software, the i7 will help.

Right now? Not much, higher clock speed though. Could OC for that.

Future, impossible to say. Hopefully games will properly support multi cores and hyperthreading at some point.

My opinion is i5 to i7, may not be worth it for just gaming. Also you may want to take a look at the intel xeon e3 1230 v3. This cpu is missed most of the time when looking for a new cpu, however to most peoples surprise it is actually just as good as a 4770k.

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

i7 will not give any kind of gaming performance boost. Save your cash and get an i5.

It's something unpredictable. But in the end is right. I hope you've had the time of your life.

the fps difference is hardly anything and the price difference makes it not worth it

Yes an i5 is fine for gaming but if you think you may be doing graphical work and video editing so on then it might be a good idea to go with the i7, even if your not editing and doing graphical work now that might not be the same in a few months time so i suggest weighting in your options will you or wont you.

This is what I've heard from when I was building my system. No reason to get an i7 for gaming unless your also doing videos, otherwise just gaming i5 is fine.

You will see maybe a 1-3 FPS increase at most from an i5 to an i7. Not worth the extra ~$100. As you said, that $100 better spent on video card or cooling equipment.

In terms of gaming, there is essentially no difference.
