RAM Recommendataion, please...

Corsair Vengeance VS. Patriot Viper 3

I am currently in the middle of getting a list of parts together that I want for a new build. I plan on doing a red and black them around the Crosshair V. The only thing I can't really decide on is the RAM. The mobo has 2 red dimms and 2 black dimms, and I would like to have 1 red kit of RAM and 1 black kit of RAM. Both Corsair and Patriot have matching sets of RAM in red and black. I have no experience with Corsair or Patriot RAM and was wondering what the forum would recommend.

The kits are the following:

Corsair

Patriot

I know 32GB is overkill but I will be running multiple VMs and doing HD video and image editing. If anybody would be able to help that would be awesome.

Get the cheapest CL9 1600 kit you can get. The CL10's are a waste of time and slower in anything but rendering and only if you overclock it properly.

Edit: You also want ram with the same voltages. Getting identical ram like what I linked should be your best choice.

Haha wow, only 20 minutes and already 5 responses. I Guess I'll probably be going with the Vengeance then. Thanks guys. Here's a picture of a sloth in space.

Don't go with the vengeance. It's CL10 and is slower unless you overclock it and even then it will only be slightly faster for rendering but still generally slower.

You can always overclock your memory. I happened to get a good set of Corsair RAM. It's the XMS3 set, 2 x 4GB. Stock is 1333 CL9 @ 1.5V. I have them overclocked to 2000 CL10 1.65V. Corsair makes some great memory.

CPU: Intel i5-2320 @ 3.9gHz

GPU: MSI GTX 670 PE @ 1411/7387

The problem is not the frequency but the latency of CL10 ram. If you can avoid it and go CL9, do so. The situations is different from yours since you got CL9 ram.

If I remember correctly, you combine the latency and frequency together to get the overall bandwidth/performance.

So 1333mHz at CL9, you get 13.5 nanosecond response times. With 10664 MB/s max bandwidth.

1600 CL9 has a 11.25 nanosecond response, with 12800 MB/s max bandwidth.

1600 CL10 has a 12.5 nanosecond response, same bandwidth..

My 2000 CL10 has a 10 nanosecond response, with 16000 MB/s bandwidth.

You solve for response time by taking 1 divided by the actual clock of the DDR RAM (1600mHz is 800) and multiplying by the CL number. 1/666 x 9 = .0135 or 13.5 ns.

Solve for maximum bandwidth by multiplying the full clock speed by 8.

What I'm saying, is he can buy the (most likely) cheaper CL10 kit, up the voltage, and change his timings or his frequency. Timing and frequency together matter, it isn't just timing.

I have Patriot Viper 3 RAM and I love it.  I haven't had any problems and Patriot is great for customer service.

I've got at least 4 months until I'll be able to buy any parts for build. So I'll look into it again closer to that time. As long as nothing revolutionary comes out in the RAM market then I will probably end up going with the Vengeance as long as I can still find the red kit.
