Car Help?

Guest Philosophy

I am not sure how many vehicle enthusiast we have here on the forum. I am hoping one of you can give me decent advise. I was on the freeway about a month ago (Merging) and when I got to fourth gear (automatic Trans) my car red-lined and would shift I slowed down went into third and back and it shifted fine up until two days ago. When ever I shift into reverse my whole car shakes and the transmission make a loud thump or band noise. Any idea what it might be. It still drives.... Edit: I have a 1996 Chverolet Lumina 99k Miles . I forgot to mention a light burnt rubber smell when I engage reverse. Always garaged,

Chances are it is an issue with the transmission, have you checked the fluid level/condition?

If the fluid is low and or black and smells burned you could have a serious issue.

Without knowing what kind of car you have and the condition of the car/engine and mileage etc. There isn't much I can say other than general random advice.

By the way I'm a lifelong gearhead, and I have a strong background in most phases of automotive repair and diagnostics.

I've just been a lurker on here for awhile now.

What ride you got?

Sounds more then likely that the transmission downshifted at the wrong time and that might have messed it up

A quick Google search brings up a few people who have had issues with the auto tranny in those cars. From my guess I wouldn't say the bad downshift wrecked your tranny but it did have a negative impact. Best to get it checked out by a professional

Seems like the transmission is going bye bye. But these cars are more built for the scrapyard.

I want an excuse for a new car... xD I must say I am slightly worried as don't want to kiss my money goodbye.

But when the car shifts in reverse, sometimes it's normal. Maybe it's just lack of power. but yeah, this car is a goner.

Sounds like your car is most likely toast wouldn't be worth it to put a new trans in. Around here those cars run about 600-1000 bucks, and a transaxle would run about that much.

I'd beat the hell out of it until it blows up and leave it where it dies.

But then, insurance...

It cost me $900 I believe it was a few years ago.

You broke something in the Transmission, take it to a shop. If it's a manual then it's fixable for a decent price, if it's an automatic start looking for a new car.

Edit: Actually now that I think about it, if it IS an automatic, it could just be the torque converter or flexplate going bad, which wouldn't be all that expensive to fix

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs
