ok lol well there are a bunch of people answering that problem for you anyways so i think you prob have that one down, I hope the other ones make sense to you as well I used to tutor peoplr in Algebra 2 a while back, now I only do algebra 1 and geometry, but I think I still remember enough to help out

So I have homework tonight for my Algebra 2 class, and I understand none of it. Math is easily my hardest subject, and while I get some things, other things won't stick no matter what. I've gone to tons of sites like Kahn Academy, and nothing helps.

 

Do any of you guys enjoy math?

 

Here are some examples of problems I've been staring at for an hour:

 

|5x + 11| = 9

4x - 5 < 15 (it needs to be graphed?!)

3 < 2x + 11 < 17

 

These might seem laughably simple to some of you, but I'm stumped as all fuck.

oh boy this is that feel good fun math.

 

For absolute values, simply set the result to both negative and positive and solve two equations for variable X.

e.g.

l5x + 11l = 9 --> 5x + 11 = 9, and 5x + 11 = -9

Move the 11 in both equations to the other side and then divide by 5. That should get your X values.

 

For problems like 4x - 5 < 15, these are easier to manage if you change the < to a = temporarily, then tack the < back on at the end

4x -5 < 15 --> 4x -5 = 15

Add 5 to both sides, divide by four, you get 4x = 20, so x < 5

To graph that, I used to do it lazy easy-mode and make my graphs by large intervals as a factor of the result.

For this you would set your line like  -10.....-5.....0......5.....10

You use an open dot for greater than, and a solid dot for less than or equal to.

This is probably my 2-3rd time in my life dipping my toes into something "programming" related.

Since the absolute value of 9 and -9 is 9, 5x + 11 must be either 9 or -9.

Set it equal and solve

5X + 11 = 9

X = -2/5

5x + 11 = -9

x = -4

 

 

Simplifying 4x - 5 < 15,

x < 5. So on a number line put an open circle on 5 (less than not equal to) and draw an arrow to the left of 5.

 

3 < 2x + 11 < 17

In multiple inequality like this you must do operations to all sides.

Subtracting 11 and then dividing by two on all sides you get:

-4<x<3

I never revised for maths and still passed. My advice is do as little work as you can and things will be alright.

Well in the UK the school system is completely different, I am in my second year at college in the UK.

solve at 4x-5 = 15 to get boundary point. 4x = 20 => x = 5. and since 4x -5 < 15, x < 5

 

same as above for the next one. Solve at 3 and 17

3= 2x + 11 => x = -4

17 = 2x+11 => x = 3

therefore -4 < x < 3

 

Pretty easy... although I'm in university

I took Algebra I in 8th grade. Now I'm taking Pre AP Geometry. I take Algebra II next year, while everybody else follows the new math standard path. Secondary math. I can still take Calculus my senior year. Woohoo!

I am an incoming freshman who started 2 weeks ago. Geometry, is actually pretty easy. Even though I'm failing.

I think you misunderstand, i didnt learn it recently.. I learned it about 3 years ago.
