Looking for GPU for 5760x1080

KR_king

Hi guys

I'm looking into buying a new gpu as my gtx285 is kinda dying and it's just getting too slow.

I'm running 3 1080p monitors for a 5760x1080 resolution.

I wish to spend as little money as possible (of course enough for a decent high-end gpu) and was thinking of getting a gtx 770 4GB. A lot of people are asking if this card is capable of running at that resolution but I couldn't find a solid answer.

Another option would be a GTX 780 since it has 3Gb of Vram.

I have never been on the AMD side for gpu's since I don't like their divers and looks of the cards and I use Cuda for PP and AE but if it is a much better option I'm willing to switch sides.  :P

I wish not to go dual gpu except if they could be found at a reasonable price.

290 is probably the best you can do without going CF

if cuda is really that important, go with a 780, the 4GB 770 is not recommendable in most use case scenario's

How come?

What wrong with the 780 6GB, to much Vram to utilize?

Extra wasted money

1gb is fine for 1080p, 3gb is fine for 3x 1080p.

Sorry to change topic but maybe it's better to wait since I just noticed MSI posted a picture of a next gen GPU on their FB page?

Those heatpipes!

EDIT: I know its a CGI mockup, but how are you supposed to get to those SLI fingers?

It's possible I think, as long as the shroud doesn't stick out too much.

Its a render where the shroud/heatpipes are sticking out to showcase the cooler. They wouldnt actually stick out that far.  Thatd be absurd.

I think its a matter of perspective, the shroud isnt long enough to cover them

I'd wait for Nvidia's 800 ( or 900 now) series. They're likely going to increase VRAM on their cards which will help with the high res.

Right now the 290/290X is the best for a single card without spending much more money.

EDIT: Also, for VRAM, 3GB is enough for most thing (BF4 and games like that). But there are games that will use more. Modded Skyrim is the worst (I use close to 3GB with a single screen, and 4GB with 3). I've also noticed Far Cry 3, AC4 and some other games go over 3GB in places. This doesn't just lower FPS, it completely kills it until it drops below the amount of VRAM your card has again. Right now, 3GB is okay, but in the near future, it's really not going to be enough at all.

Thanks guys.

I see, so it would rather be worth it for 1440p?

780 is not powerfull enough to keep up with something that can use more than 3GB's of Vram even if you 2-way SLİ it

The amount of misinformation regarding the 6GB 780 is astounding. HardOCP tested a 6GB 780 vs a 3GB 780 at 1600p, 4K, and Surround 5760 x 1200. The 3GB 780 lost in every single benchmark and was forced to lower its settings drastically compared to the 6GB 780 because of lack of VRAM.

  1. R9-290
  2. GTX780

This are the 2 options that i would recommend.

If you realy need cuda, and you cannot use open CL instead, then the GTX780 would be the better choice for you.

If you can utilize open CL then i would go with the 290. cause its mostly cheaper then a 780.

So you want to game with surround display to right? 3gb on bf4 at that res isn't enough, unless you want to play like crap. I doubt it's in the price range but Titan black is the best if not some like of 780ti if you're going to stick to the green side.

For what it's worth I ran 3x1080s with a single 760 for a little while (previous specs in sig build). It ran BF4 at console grade FPS. Tolerable, barely.

I'd say 280x crossfire if you can squeeze it into your budget.

Crossfire support has vastly improved, two 280x's in crossfire will beat any single card solution, AMD's Eyefinity is better than Nvidia's surround. A 280x is also cheaper than a 770, and a fair bit cheaper than a 4GB variant of that card.

Thanks guys for all the advice.

School has started again and I decided not to buy a new gpu.

Instead I bought myself a new 15" MBP which is quite useful for school.

In a couple of months, when I have saved some money again, I'll probably go for a 'GTX x80' card if the performance is still good.
