"Magnificent Beast"- My Ubuntu Server (aka the Mutt Machine)

WitzTech

This has been a project with a budget of zero, using only spare parts from old builds, etc.  It will continue to evolve as I upgrade my gaming rig (build log coming soon), which is good because the crappy CPU cooler I'm currently running is just not going to cut it...  It's not pretty, nor is it all that safe, but it sure is cool as hell.

Specs (subject to change- planned parts denoted with: [ -> ], all these parts I already own.  They just need to be replaced with better stuff first...)

INNARDS

-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 gHz

-HP ASUS Micro-ATX board

-8 Gigs of slow DDR2

-AWA cpu cooler -> Antec 620 CLC

-300w Lite-On PSU -> Antec 520w HCG

-Random VIA soundcard that probably doesn't work, haven't bothered with it

STORAGE

-OCZ Onyx boot drive (32gb)

-500gb Seagate Barracuda

-640gb WD Blue (5400rpm)

->1tb Seagate Barracuda

->500gb Samsung F4

Many Molex to Sata power adapters

THE CASE

-Diablotek EVO Midtower

-180mm Silverstone AP181

-120mm Silverstone non AP-> maybe a Corsair SP120?

-Card reader from HP minitower

-front IO from HP minitower

Now all of this stuff probably seemed normal until you read 180mm... a strange size for a case with all 120mm fan spacing (the top supports 140, but that still ain't 180mm).  Then you read that I used the IO from an HP minitower... confused yet?

So this is the front of the EVO, which I highly recommend as a budget case.  I used it for my mother's computer, but upgraded her to my old TJ-08E when I got my R4, as it was much quieter and took up less room than the EVO, but not without removing the 180mm fan and replacing it with some fans that undervolt better.

So the Diablotek case was the first donor part I had for this build, along with one of the HDDs and the Boot SSD.  The rest of the parts (other than fans) came from the old HP my father was using until the built him a new machine this January (build log for that to be done when i have free time/energy)  The only complaint I really have with the Diablotek, other than the loudish stock fans, is the front mesh being a dust magnet.  Thus, I ripped it off, and realizing that my AP181 would fit right in the 5.25 bay area, created this magnificent beast:

Looking pretty boss (and yes the switch to the side of the (undervolted) 180mm fan turns it on and off, Silverstone makes great fans!)

With AP181

I didn't have a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter for the SSD... Also, the cables on this PSU are meant for a mini tower, so getting everything to cooperate was not easy.

Thanks for viewing! I'll add pictures when I upgrade along the way.

EDIT: Pics taken with my phone, I'll replace them when i get my hands on a decent camera.
