Should i buy 2 gtx 780 (reference cards or the one with the aftermarket cooler) to replace my 2x GTX 680 Classifieds from EVGA. I have a few rigs and they need video cards so the 680s would go in those. But for my main rig, I'm torn and don't know whether to get 2 780s or whether the performance gain wouldn't be noticeable enough :/

Thanks in advance for the replies!

The 780 almost doubles the performance of a 680. Not saying that he needs to upgrade, rather that I wouldn't call the performance increase a "marginal difference".

Me: Yeah I just really can't get my H220 working again, I've tried everything that was suggested in the forum.

Brian (Swiftech Support): Hmm, have you tried slapping it?

Do you need to upgrade? Perhaps just get one 780 or split the 680's?

Ok, ya I exaggerated. But it still has a bigger performance increase than you just posted.

You have to cherry pick the games to make it look good and even better than it is.

Those are minimum frame rate differences. Try average; the difference is a lot more.

Min is what counts as that's what makes the game fast or slow. Also variance from min to max creates stutter the bigger the variance the greater the stutter. Min is what matter most.

The differences in the avg and highest framerate is what shows the performance gain.

Min is what matters as the Min framerate is usually an indicator of how well the GPU can overcome the most graphically intensive situations in the game.

That is true, but for some reason, even with 2-way SLI on the 4GB Classified 680s, I still can't run Crysis 3 at 8xmsaa over 33fps. idk why, but it just doesn't work.

Try Alt Tabing to windowed mode and then Alt Tabing back to full screen.

The GTX 780 provides a significant increase in performance over the GTX 680 in most circumstances as well as provides a nice boost in memory bandwidth as well as capacity.  If your budget allows I'd say you should certainly go for two 780's.  Of course I personally usually upgrade to every new generation of video card so I'm probably a bit biased...

@Mr. Freeman, the crysis alt+tabbing didn't do anything. Max of 5x and low of 28. they're not o/c because i'm having trouble finding a stable one. @MegaTechPC, the bandwidth is slightly higher, that's very true, but the total memory capacity of the cards are 1gb lower, although, event at 1440p, crysis doesn't hit the 4gb limit (very close though lol.)

I would wait. If you can wait for the 800 series that'd be great. But if nothing else at least wait till they release 6gb versions of the gtx 780's. The 680 was released with 2gb of memory and you have the 4gb models that followed. I'm sure they'll release double memory versions of the 780's. Dont want to spend $1300 on an upgrade that is a memory downgrade.

The titan isnt a double memory version of the Gtx 780. Its a gaming/workstation card with excellent compute power and double precision performance in addition to its gaming abilities, hence its hefty price tag. The manufacturers will still very likely release a double memory version of the GTX 780 for about 100 bucks more just like they did with the GTX 580 and GTX 680 that proceeded it. Not to mention titan is a reference card with 6gb of memory whereas double memory cards have the additional memory added by the manufacture (asus evga etc)... not nvidia.

my opinion: stick with the 680's and get the gtx8** - series next time, or just get new cards when you feel that they're slowing down (and by that I mean like noticable things like lag and whatnot) or just died out. It's not worth to get 2 new cards if the cards you have now are not even old yet lol. When it aint broken; don't fix it :)
