Can you use a second video card(not crossfire)just for running an extra screen?

 

I will not be gaming on the extra screen,it will be running either youtube or vlc or pandora or something like that.

 

Because i have 2  matching screens in lawaway at a pawn shop and plan to triple screen,then have an extra screen on the side,but i don't have a display port cord.but i do have an old extra video card lying around.

Yes, but running a second screen will not even come close to bogging your system down. You don't need a second graphics card for this, unless you just want to.

It should be possible. You might have issues though if you concurrently use two different display drivers, for example AMD and nvidia.

I had a nvidia 9900 gt and a radeon 4890 in my old pc, Should not be that many problems as long as your PSU can handle it.

Sometimes the drivers may go crazy but there is usally tricks or fixes for it.

If you are going triple monitor then you need a graphics card that can support 3 monitors well. For gaming, you will need either a 780 or a R9 290. Since you're not using the 3 monitors for gaming, then you don't need to add another graphics card. Putting a couple of different graphics cards in your PC for different monitors is only going to make things complicated.

OK I do plan on gaming on the 3 screens,which are old dell 1280x1024 screens, my main gpu is a r9 270x, and my idea is going to use my single 1080p on the side running off the extra gpu, an old x800, and my pay can do it, I have 1000w

If you aint going to do a Eyefinity setup you can have the 270x on the gaming monitor and have the other monitor/monitors on another GPU.

Well I planned on running a 3 way portrait eyefinity for a res of 3072x1280, I know I will have to turn settings down, this is just until I can afford a 1440p screen.

The 1080p screen would be my secondary screen, but I would want to run it off other card.

If you are going to game with the resolution 2072x1280 you should do a crossfire setup since a single 270x is not enough if you want to play at higher settings.
