One is ridiculously priced (780 ti) and one is not (290), should really not be that hard to decide, if you have the money and need the gpu power i say way to see what 800 series brings, otherwise just get the 290.

AMD does dual GPU's better than Nvidia. So I'd say go with a 290X now and a second later.

A 780ti is a very powerful GPU and 2 of them are more powerful than 2 290s. That said, before you settle on one of them consider the following: what is your setup? Are you gaming in 4K? Surround? 1440p? 1080p? Also remember that the new Nvidia 800 series is coming out in late September / early October. The new 880 is rumored to be 30% more powerful than the 780ti and less expensive. Even if you don't end up buying the 880, 700 series will inevitably drop in price on the release of the 800 series. Just wait until the release to make your decision.

The r9 290's pull ahead at higher resolutions so if you're thinking long term 1440p/4k gaming, do yourself a favor and don't purchase the 780ti. You'll also be saving money, and that's not a bad thing.

2 290s. You're basically comparing an F22 Raptor to an F35 Lightning. Both are going to kill anything they go up against. And since 2 290s will be about 1/3 as expensive as 2 780 tis, then there's no more to say about this.

I concur with the single r9 290 option. Look into the sapphire vapor-x/tri-x cards. Do not, I repeat, do not get a reference card.

agree here, just grab a single 290 first and see how it performs, on the res you prefer to play.

If you not satisfied with it, you can allways add a second 290.

 

If you look at benchmarks at 1440p there is not much of a diffrence between 780ti sli or 290 (x) xfire.

1080p sli/Cf benchmarks with those highend cards, is something that totaly make no sense to me.

290´s are still allot cheaper so yeah.

that's a mistake. You are getting much better performance from 2 290s than with a 780ti. And by the time "later" rolls around there will be something better than a 780 ti anyways. Don't think you can futureproof your rig by SLIing 2 780 tis. And the 290s have 4 GB VRAM rather than 3 that the 780ti has.

Silly. Why the hell would someone buy a 290x over the 290? Can you honestly justify the extra cost?

Really its your choice. AMD is better bang for buck. Nvidia is quality, runs better, and has better support/software/etc. Your choice.

Yeah... I would say Nvidia performs better with multi GPU setups. They are both pretty similar now.

I have and it seems to be true in a few games. Especially if you're not keen on getting dual 780 ti's at the price. Don't worry tho, I'm not a fanboy. All I buy is Nvidia, but I also prefer single GPU setups more. Of course, I'm sure you're ballin with dual 780 ti's.

I'm not a fanboy either. But I've always thought nVidia is the king of drivers and dual gpu performance.
