Why wouldnt i buy a Used 290/x?

Totally-A-Hero

So im looking at these cards on  ebay, and the non reference 290's are selling for 300 USD and the 290x's for 350-400. Most of these come with warranty. So im asking why i wouldnt save all this money, and if it breaks RMA it? Dose the warranty not carry over or am i missing something? Seems like a damn good deal to me.

EDIT: I know all these cards were prob mined 24/7 for like 5 months

Not all warranties are transferrable. XFX is the only company where I know it is.

So require they send you the receipt along with the 290X? That'd limit the number of ones you could actually buy, but then you'd have the warranty.

Well them not having warranties is a huge issue (obvious) but if they did? Why not?

The previous user might have used it for mining cryptocurrencies.

They could have been mining cards.

I consider this irrelevant. The 290X, based on AMD's reference specifications, are made to run at 95C safely. If it's not a reference 290X, then it's probably going to hit somewhere in the 65-85 range, which, even at 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a year, shouldn't affect the GPUs longevity significantly, if it can run at 95C just fine. Obviously I haven't run tests with this, but I'm just saying: Some non-reference 290Xs with great air coolers hit in that 65-85C max temperature range. If 95C is fine for the 290X for gaming (not constantly), then such low temps (relatively) should be fine for constant use.

And I know they can withstand that, because mine can (I have two reference 290Xs, and they do just fine at 95C for extended periods of time, I even crypto-mined with one for a month).

@OP: see if you can find anything about transfering warranties. if it's anything like in europe, the warranty is given with the receipt.

I am just waiting to shoot down a GTX 780 + warranty for 200€. :D

I really don't know because I've never gone through the RMA process with a gpu so I don't know if you need the receipt or something of the like.

Doesn't always work. If it's a company that puts the original purchasers name on the invoice, and your name doesn't match, then no warranty for you.

Ive been running 290's from ebay that were mined with for months.  I have had them for a couple months now - no issues.  Price was too good to pass up regardless of warranty.

Remember, a lot of miners are running cards undervolted and/or high fan speeds to keep temps low as that equates to lower power consumption and more return on their investment.  I think the worry about the miner cards are overblown.

depending on the miner it could have been very well taken care of with every thing in place to make sure it did not over heat ect ect or the later one where some guy/girl figured I can make money doing this!!!!!  tried it decided it was taking to long and ditched it there for you don't know what he did to it and is just like meh I can make some money back I guess.

Bought 2 R9 290's on Ebay for my new upcoming build at the time from a reputable seller, the cards looked in mint condition and were around 6 months old or so, was assured they werent OC'ed or Mined with.

When i got them I uninstalled my drivers for my old 770 and fit one of the bad boys in. After about 30 mins the cards black screened and continued to do so until I used a driver uninstaller several times after which they then began screen freezing about once an hour while just browsing the net, although this never happened whilst in games (or very rarely did at least).

Parts came for my brand new pc and slotted both cards in and never had a problem since. No idea why they were black screening/freezing as I had 750W bronze PSU which was more than enough for 1 card.

But yeah, if theyre mined, be careful imo. Only warrenty thats transferable as far as i know is XFX.

Yup, USD to € in a 1:1 ratio, which means we Europeans pay around 25% more for the same damn thing, PC realated, not everything obviously ;).

In Germany it's more like a 1 to 0.85 (Also a € is more like 1.32 $)

I believe MSI and Gigabyte warranty only require the serial numbers from their cards.

Any cards that were used in data centers are in good condition anyway.
