What's the general consensus of Bose (headphones) in the audiophile community?

I don't want Bose headphones or anything - I'm just curious...

I've never owned one of their products, but my friend think that he knows what he is talking about when he says " Bose is the best audio company there is " . I know most people my age will just defend what ever company they have and be completely ignorant about other options out there. I have tried some of them (at Target) and they sound pretty un-exceptional, the noise cancellation is pretty nice though. (don't listen to what i have to say im just a young tatertot)

I think saying that any single company is the best there is is already a red flag in terms of the person's credibility...
