I don't know if this is old news, or a repost, but I hear that Alienware is coming out with a console of their own http://www.alienware.com/landings/alpha/

They say it can't run things like COD at 60fps at 1080p. Which is always good to admit the flaws of your product right there so we don't buy it expecting something out of something so underpowered for the money they want for it. They say it gives access to over 3000+ Steam games but only 500 are good for use of a controller. Which is also sad since they claim it's supposed to be a console. I'd like to see what this thing can do with DayZ in it's current state....

Now, you know what you can expect from these barbarians. They are a race of rabid BASTARDS that will fight us tooth and nail! But they don't know what they're up against. Cyrodiil, is CIVILIZATION! Cyrodiil, is ORDER! Cyrodiil is POWER! And out here, WE. ARE. CYRODIIL.

Old news.

Only thing good about it is that they're building software to allow the controller it comes with to control Windows. Other than that I think they failed on it. It could have been really neat if it was fully modular (GPU and other things upgradeable with ease) and still hit the same pricepoint.

It should be posted in here: http://linustechtips.com/main/forum/13-tech-news-and-reviews/?sort_key=start_date&sort_by=Z-A

It's pretty much a console, it's nowhere close to a PC anyway.

Yet another person to bitch about where the topic should go. Anyway, love your name. And yes, I can't see why people could actually buy into it. In my opinion part of the whole "PC experience" is having a keyboard and mouse to play the games on.

it's a steambox they've been showing off for a while.

I guess they're just sick of waiting for valve to release Steam OS and want to release their product before their hardware is completely dated

it's cool that they take bitcoin as payment, too

My question is who does this appeal to...and who is willing to spend that kind of money for technology that will be outdated in 2-3 years...

It's not a console, it's an underpowered PC. The whole point of caring for consoles are exclusives. When the platform ls a console that lacks those, there is zero incentive to not build your own. The lack of proper cooling is reason enough since it's a PC anyway. Grab a snazzy itx case and use Steam Big Picture along with a 360 controller and you're set.

Don't even try to sell me the notion that it's difficult for some people..there are videos of little kids who can build them no problem. The average Joe should care more for such things instead of blowing hundreds on a shady repair shop that'd charge just to plug in a loose cable.

But building is still something that puts people off, yes its easy we all know that but its still a major factor for people. Building is still for the monitories and enthusiasts. Seriously, I worked in computer retail for 7 years, at least 20 times a day I would have 14 year old kids, or peoples dads asking if we sold "gaming pcs" or if we could build one for them because they did not understand PCS

There are people that are gamers that do now know what a graphics card is, and are either unwilling to put in the time or effort to build them

Its about time a small cheap "gaming" pre-built pc was available from a brand that joe public associates with gaming

For the price it is going for, and its tiny size I am seriously considering one for my living room. It looks so cute and badass

Steam big picture does not do enough in the OS IMO, it is still very basic in functionality.

Linus actually knows what he is doing and used a chassis that was bigger, he still had to address overheating issues. That one video of him modifying his cabinet for the living room media PC. That is where this unit will be used and I can already imagine the future overheating issues. Shame the public perception is wrong, but I'd rather not derail this topic on why Beats are terrible as well as other trendy products the public thinks are good because they don't know better.

In all honesty, I respect Dell's branding more with their XPS line up than this leftover children's toy of a once boutique builder.

Yeah linus does, but its hard to comment on its cooling when we have no idea what GPU they are running and how the thing performs. This thing might be absolutely fine in an enclosed environment, or out in the open on display like most people have their consoles, whod want to hide it away when it looks cool! (subjective)

The public have no idea what they are doing, and that is who pre-builts target, if Dell/Alienware can release a cheap PC Console, that appeals to gamers it can only be a good thing

If it helps more people adopt PC gaming, then in the future those people will be more likely to build a proper rig further down the line when they release how much they want to run higher settings and how good the PC experience can be

I cannot be alone in thinking of the positives these kind of devices can bring
